Biography

Cecil George Herbert Alers Hankey was born on 23 March 1874 and was baptized on 25 April 1874 at St. Mary Abbotts Church, Kensington, West Brompton, London. He was the son of Walter Childe Alers Hankey and Caroline Jane Anne Alers Hankey. (The surname is shown as Alers Hankey.) His father was a merchant, and they lived at 39 Bedcliffe Gardens.[1] His birth was registered in the Kensington Registration District, London, during the first quarter of 1874.[2]

The marriage of Gertrude Clare Fetherstonhaugh and Cecil George H. A. Hankey was registered in the St. George Hanover Square, London, registration district during the 2nd Quarter of 1899.[3]

The death of Cecil G. H. A. Hankey was registered at Chichester, Sussex, England, during 1940.[4]

Cecil's estate was entered into probate (limited) at Llandudno on 7 May 1941. He was of Binderton House near Chichester. Probate was granted to his widow, Clare Gertrude Hankey, William Haward, bank manager, and John Frank Whitfield, solicitor. His estate was valued at £97700 9s. 7p.[5]

The following remembrance appeared in a newspaper in England regarding George Hankey. (The newspaper and date are not identified.)[6]:

HANKEY. -- In devoted and grateful remembrance, on this especial anniversary, of my husband, CECIL ALERS HANKEY, commanded 3 Royal Sussex Regiment, D.L. and J.P. for the County of Sussex, who died at Binderton House, Chichester, on Aug. 28, 1940. And of our two sons, WALTER (late Sussex Yeomanry), who died at Craddock, Cape Province, on Dec. 28, 1926, aged 22 years, and STEPHEN, Acting Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force, who was killed returning to Tangmere Aerodrome from air operations on Dec. 17, 1943, aged 28 years.
