Biography

Catherine "Ann" Hankinson was born on July 7, 1804, in Digby, Nova Scotia, to Reuben Hankinson and Gertrude LeRoy. She was married three times and had four sons and four daughters. She died after 1895 in Webster County, Iowa, and was buried in Lehigh, Iowa.

"Ann, b. July 7, 1804; m. Peter, son of Geo. Saxton, and had Reuben, John, David, and Ann. He froze to death in 1832, and she m. Powell, and Vrooman." [1][2]

In about 1824, Catherine Ann married Elijah Peter Saxton in Weymouth Nova Scotia and they had four children. He froze to death in 1832 in Nova Scotia.

On July 6 1836, Catherine Ann married William Sterling Powell. They had four children, probably while still living in Nova Scotia, and moved to Burlington, Calhoun, Michigan, by 1850.[3]. The 1850 Census shows her living with children David, Margaret Ann and Reuben, from her first marriage, along with children Satisa, James, Mary and Samantha Powell. William died about 1855.

In 1860 the U.S. Census shows "Ann Powell", widowed and living with two unmarried daughters, Ann and Elizabeth, in Lee County, Illinois. She lived near her daughter, Ann Saxton (Gray) in later life and is mentioned in a biography of Ann's husband: "Peter and Catherine (Hankinson) Saxton, were natives of Nova Scotia, where they were married, and where the father died. The widow came to Canada with her four children, and there lived for many years. She is now a resident of Iowa." [4][5]

On August 19, 1863[6], Catherine Ann married, as her third husband, the twice widowed Adam Vrooman, in Lee County, Illinois.[7][8] He died in 1871 and the 1880 census shows her living with her daughter, Samantha Elizabeth Powell (Cooper) in Sumner, Webster, Iowa.

Her tombstone in Sumner, Webster, Iowa gives a death date of "April 23", but no death year.[9] She is last shown living with her daughter, Samantha Powell (Cooper), in 1895. [10]

The Iowa census ot 1885 does not show that Catherine Ann is living with the Coopers. This provides some evidence that she died between 1880 and 1885.
