Biography

Profile written by Allan Harl Thomas

"Aunt Lillian" was a school teacher in San Benito, TX for over 25 years.[1] She influenced 100's if not 1000's of 1st graders in San Benito along with sister, Jessie Harl Thomas. She took an active role in the musical community of the "Magical Valley" and accompanied former vaudeville performer Alba Heywood on a number of occasions. Not only did Miss Harl play the violin, she was an accomplished pianist. She was well known for her humorous theatrical readings. Her paintings of historical Texas Churches were well known.

She was an active member of the San Benito Baptist Church. Her father, the Rev. Stephen Clay Harl, had been hired as a "missionary pastor" by the Rio Grande Baptist Association and died in San Benito in 1922

Miss Lillian left San Benito in 1946 to assume a teaching position in San Antonio where she resided with her niece, Miss Grace Harl.

She retired in Brownsville and die there Dec. 26, 1964. She is buried at Buena Vista Burial Park Brownsville.
