DAVID R. HARNEY (1824-1863)

David R. Harney was the son of Riley Harney and Letitia (Ray). According to the 1850 census, he was born in Ohio shortly before the family settled in Parke county, Indiana, but his military file lists Parke co. IN as his place of birth. He married Mary Elizabeth Johnson and they had the following children:

  • Henry C. (b.1849);
  • George (1851-1928);
  • David W. (1854-1900);
  • Susan aka Susanne Jennie (1856-1881); and
  • James M. Harney (1860-1875).

When the Civil War broke out, David R. joined the 21st Indiana Regiment Heavy Artillery, along with his younger brother, Joshua. This regiment was mustered into service 24 July 1861, and went to Baltimore, where it did service on the eastern shores of Virginia. They also went to New Orleans and made numerous forays into the interior. Both David R. and his brother Joshua Harney were killed in these actions. David died at Port Hudson, Louisiana, 6 July 1863. David's widow filed for a pension on 15 September 1862 sic [this must be 1863].

David is described in his military file as 5'10" tall, with blue eyes, red hair, and a sandy complexion. “Corporal D.R. Harney was killed July 6th by a musket ball from the rebel works at Port Hudson. He was an old and well known citizen of Parke county, and left a wife and children to mourn his death. A better soldier than Harney never lived, as all who are acquainted with his life in the army will testify.”

Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Harney later married into the Martin family of Parke county (Mr. James H. Martin)
