Biography

Charles Harrow was born 7 November 1877 or 1878. The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index states 7 November 1878 with a birth place of Adair County, Iowa.

Parents

It is unclear if Charles is the biological son of both William Harrow and Maggie Sanders. William I. Harrow and Maggie Sanders are stated as his parents in the US Social Security Applications and Claims Index. It is stated in the local newspaper at the time of William Harrow's death in 1929 that "Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Harrow of Kansas City and Mrs. E.B. Thorton of Beatrice left Wednesday afternoon for the homes after having attended the funeral of their father, W.I. Harrow." His parents are given as William I. Harrow and Maggie Sanders on his death certificate. However, his birth year as stated in his death certificate, 1877, is four years before William and Maggie's marriage in 1881.

He is not enumerated by the name of "Charles Harrow" in their household in the 1885 Iowa State Census. A "Staley, Charles", age 7, is in the household of William and Maggie in Leon, Decatur County, Iowa in the 1885 Iowa State Census (entry index found here). His relationship to the head of household is not noted. A researcher notes on this index entry on Ancestry.com that Charles Staley is Charles Harrow, named for the husband of Maggie's sister, Rachel.

The North Platte Tribune (North Platte, Nebraska) 17 August 1926 p. 1. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harrow of Kansas City and daughter left this morning for their home after visiting at the Jack Palmer home for a few days. Note - Clara Harrow Palmer, wife of Jack Palmer, is the sister of Charles Harrow.

Kearney Daily Hub (Kearney, Nebraska) 8 August 1927 p. 8: Callaway Queen Notes. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harrow and daughter, Margaret, of Kansas City, arrived here on Tuesday morning and are visiting with Mr. Harrow's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Harrow and his brother Frank and their families.

MARRIAGE

1. Possibly Grace Randall on 6 April 1898 at Hastings, Nebraska.

The Clarinda Journal (Clarinda, Page, Iowa) 8 April 1898: Married, at Hastings, Neb, at 7:30 p.m., April 6, Charles Harrow and Miss Grace Randall. Charles has been employed by C.L. Beach for several months and his many friends here will be glad to extend congratulations.

The Essex Independent (Essex, Iowa) 8 April 1898 p. 5, col. 2: Charles Harrow, the baker for C.L. Beech, left Tuesday morning for a visit with friends in Nebraska. LATER - He returned to Essex last evening with a wife. Success to the newly married couple.

2. Charles married Ellen Elizabeth Pattison, a widow, about 11 August 1908 in Jackson County, Missouri. [1] Based on notations in the 1910 United States census and the age of Charles's son Harold at that time (see below), it is likely that this is a second marriage although the license application requires only that the applicant affirm he is single.

Ellen, died 24 November 1922. The cause of death is "apoplexy". A copy of her death certificate is here.

3. Unknown. The newspaper notice in 1926 notes a "Mrs." Charles Harrow.

Children

The Essex Independent (Essex, Iowa) 22 June 1900 p. 5, col. 1: Chas. Harrow and wife rejoice over the birth of a son last Monday.

CENSUS HISTORY

1880 United States Census -

1885 Iowa State Census - Charles Staley (7/Adair County, Iowa) in the household of William Harrow (uncertain).

The North Platte Daily Record (North Platte, Nebraska) 25 August 1896 p. 1: Mr. Charles Harrow, of Fairfield, NEB, who formerly worked at the Vienna in this city has again taken a position as "hasher" at this well known institution.

1900 United States Census - Pierce, Page County, Iowa

It is believed that Charles is enumerated in the 1900 United States census, living in Pierce, Page County, Iowa with his wife, Lele. This Page County Charles is stated to have been born in November 1875 in Iowa. Charles Harrow was born in Iowa in November, although the birth year most commonly given is 1877. In the 1910 census, Charles has a 9 year old son born in Iowa, whose mother was stated to have been born in Nebraska. The wife, Lele, of this Page County Charles is stated to have been born in Nebraska. Charles' father and mother, William and Maggie, lived in Nebraska since at least 1886 (based on birth places of their children in 1900 census). If this is the correct Charles Harrow, he and Lele would have been married in about 1898 (stated 2 years married in the 1900 US Census), possibly in Hastings (see clipping above), or in Lincoln County, Nebraska or Clay County, Nebraska (based on where William, Charles' father, lived approximately 1886 - 1900).

The Essex Independent (Essex, Iowa) 26 October 1900 p.5, col. 5: Chas. Harrow has stored his household goods in the Sanderson hall. Chas. and wife are now living in Nebraska.

1910 United States Census - Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri (2123 E. 31st St.). Also in the household is his wife, Ellen. The notations (M2) seem to indicate it is a second marriage for both of them. Also in the household is Harold Harrow, age 9, indicated to be the son of Charles. As Charles and Ellen were married only 2 years previously, it is unlikely that Harold is her son. Additional people in the household are Ellen's daughter, Lillian O. Pattison (age 18), and Charles' brother and sister in law, Fred Harrow (26) and Minnie E. Harrow (23). Charles' occupation is given as a baker, as is Fred's.

12 September 1918 - Charles Harrow is residing in Jackson County, Missouri at the time of his WW1 draft registration. His occupation is given as "baker".

1920 United States Census - 3622 Brooklyn Avenue, Kansas City (Jackson County), Missouri. He is 42 years old. His occupation is owner of a bakery. Also in the household is his wife, Ellen (50). She has no occupation. Year: 1920; Census Place: Kansas City Ward 13, Jackson, Missouri; Roll: T625_929; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 200; Image: 13.

1930 United States Census - 710 E. 86th Terrace in Kansas City (Jackson County) Missouri. He is 50 years old. His occupation is proprietor of a bakery. Also in the household is his wife, Majorie (32), and daughter Margaret (12). Marjorie's occupation is helper in the bakery. Year: 1930; Census Place: Washington, Jackson, Missouri; Roll: 1204; Page: 35A; Enumeration District: 283; Image: 972.0; FHL microfilm: 2340939

1940 United States Census - 3604 - 3606 Troost Avenue in Kansas City (Jackson County) Missouri. He is 62 years old. His occupation is baker in his own bakery. Also in the household is his wife Marjorie, and his daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Robert Hunzeker. Year: 1940; Census Place: Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri; Roll: T627_2170; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 116-116.

DEATH

Charles died 10 October 1946 as the result of injuries suffered when he was hit by a streetcar while crossing the street in Kansas City, Missouri. A copy of Charles' death certificate is here.
