Ralph Hartley was born in Lancashire, England.

Ralph's father was a tailor. Ralph was a weaver. He married Martha Whitehead in 1754 and they lived in Fieldhouse, Rochdale. He died in July 1805 and was buried at St. Chad's, Rochdale.
