Biography

Alexander Harvey and Hannah Wilson are my Great, Great grandparents. ( Charles William Harvey ( Harvey- 2679 ) . Born, Keyser, WV )

By Marshall G. Brown ALEXANDER HARVEY, son of Elijah and Margaret Barrick Harvey was born Aug., 13, 1814, near Emoryville, W. Va., and died May 3, 1859, at his home near Short Run in Allegany now Garrett County, Md.1 He married Nov., 8, 1838, Hannah Wilson, who was the daughter of Thomas III and Susan Bowman Wilson. She was born Feb., 21, 1821, and died Feb., 13, 1895.2 Thomas III and Susan Bowman Wilson lived in Maryland near what is now called Kitzmiller. They reared a family of fifteen children, thirteen of whom lived to maturity. Nine of these children were daughters. Six of these daughters married Harveys, two of which were sons of Elijah and Margaret Barrick Harvey, namely William Low man and Alexander; and four were sons of Rezin and Elizabeth Queen Harvey, namely, William, Elisha, Noah and Nathaniel Bell. The story of the Wilson family has been told in an excellent genealogy written by Merrit Wilson, Jr., entitled The Wilson Family of Western Maryland and West Virginia and Associated Families, Ashby, Cresap, Harvey, Moon. This book will be referred to many times.

During their early married life Alexander and Hannah Wilson Harvey lived in Hampshire County, Va., now Mineral County, W. Va., probably on the old Elijah Harvey farm. They were listed as a family of two in the 1840 Federal census for Hampshire County.

On Jan., 1, 1849, Alexander Harvey bought for $400, Military Lot No. 131 in Allegany County, Md., from William and Susannah Mail. This lot was located about a half mile above the Potomac River near Short Run. He probably moved here shortly thereafter, as he and Hannah were listed in the 1850 Federal census for Allegany County, Md. In this census he was listed as "Ellick" Harvey. This was the name by which he was popularly known. On Oct., 15, 1855, he bouaht from Daniel R. and Eliza Brant, for $1,000, Military Lots No. 127 and 128. These two lots were adjacent to the previously purchased lots.

By 1859 Alexander and Hannah Wilson Harvey had reared a family of ten children; five boys and five girls, varying in age from one to eighteen years. one of these children, George, evidently died during this time as he was listed in the 1850 but not the 1860 Federal census for Allegany County.

Alexander Harvey died on May 3, 1859 in his mid-forties. The writer ( Cousin, Marshall G. Brown ) did, not know the cause of this untimely death. He finally went to see Arthur Scott Harvey, a grandson, who was living in Mt. Lake Park, Md., at the advanced age Of ninety-three. He said his grandmother Hannah Wilson Harvey had told him the story many times. Following is the story he related to the writer on Aug., 17, 1971.

"Alexander Harvey mounted his horse at his home with a basket of eggs on his arm for the purpose of taking them across the mountain to Altamont to a store. He followed the path for some time when he saw a forked sapling that had fallen across the path. When the horse got to the fallen sapling his feet became entangled in it and the horse fell. The falling horse severely injured Mr. Harvey in the fall. Somehow he was able to mount the horse and return home. Hannah saw him approaching and realized that something was wrong. She met him and assisted him in dismounting from the horse, and helped him into the house. The next day he died as a result of the injury. The doctor said he died from a ruptured intestine. Some of the eggs, were unbroken."

It is not difficult to imagine the extreme sorrow created in this family as a result of this death. Hannah's brother, James Wilson was made administrator of Alexander's property. This was done by the following deed:

"This deed made this 24th day of March in the year 1860 by Daniel R. Brant now being in Allegany County and State of Maryland of the said county and state aforesaid Whereas the said Daniel R. Brant has heretofore sold and executed a deed to Alexander Harvey for the lands hereinafter described but the said Harvey has since departed this life before he paid all the notes of consideration money for the same leaving his widow and heirs at law and the object of this deed is further to secure and convey the title to said tract of land to the said James Wilson administrator of Alexander Harvey deceased in trust for the use and benefit of the said widow and children or heirs at law of the said Alexander Harvey deceased who died intestate.

"Now this deed Witnesseth that the said Daniel R. Brant for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars current money in hand paid to the said Daniel R. Brant by the said James Wilson administrator as aforesaid the said Daniel R. Brant doth grant release and confirm unto the said James Wilson administrator as aforesaid of Alexander Harvey deceased, all that tract of Land lying and being in Allegany County and State of Maryland called "Gavelion" being the same as Lots No's 127 and 128 of the Military Lots lying Westward of Fort Cumberland in said Allegany County and containing one hundred acres more or less.

"To Have and To Hold the above described part of. land with the appurtenances unto the said James Wilson administrator of Alexander Harvey deceased in trust for the sole use and Benefit of the present Widow and the children and heirs at law of the said Alexander Harvey deceased forever. Witness my hand and seal.
