Biography

William Hasey (sometimes Halce, Halsie, Hasey, Hasie, Hassy, Haseye and Hazzy; the later form was Hasey) was born in 1619. He lived at Rumney Marsh (Pullen Point), now in Revere, Massachusetts. He bought the Samuel Cole farm at Rumney Marsh 24 Mar 1653-4, and sold his house in Boston to Cole. "Wm Hazzey" was made freeman in 1665. On 27 May 1674, Cornet William Hasey was confirmed as Lieutenant of the Three County Troop and was its commander in 1675. William was the father of William Hasey and grandfather of William Hasey who died at Wakefield, Massachusetts in King Phillip's War, Feb 1676.[1]

William married Sarah Seward before 1647 at Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Sarah was born at Chelsea in 1624. On March 9, 1649/50 "Sara Harsey ye wife of Wm Harsey" was admitted to the Boston church, and on 23 March 1651/2 Elizabeth, Sarah and Hester, daughters of "William Hersy's wife" were baptized.[1]

I agree these families do not belong together. William the son of Thomas Hassen and Elizabeth was baptised 1622 and died March 1629/30.

I propose the parents be disconnected - objections?

Hasey-24 and Hasey-1 do not represent the same person because: Thank you, Jill, for your research work on this family. It would be interesting to chat with you sometime. My father and I have independently conducted extensive research on the family of William Hasey (born 1618/1619) in England, and I have compiled many generations of descendants. I wish I had all the source citations at hand, but they’re away in storage. I do have our genealogy database on my PC, however.

I believe these two families should not be merged, due to significant errors and issues to be worked out, especially the apparently erroneous connection to Thomas and Elizabeth Hassend. 1) William Hasey (born 1618 or 1619 in England) settled near Boston: first in Pullen Point, then Rumney Marsh circa 1653/54 (later called Chelsea and N. Chelsea) which is today within Revere, Suffolk, MA. 2) I researched Thomas and Elizabeth Hassend in England. But so far, I found no connections with the Haseys. I believe it’s unlikely, because of the spelling, and also because in America, Thomas resided far from Rumney Marsh. Were you able to find a connection that I missed? 3) William Hasey's wife was called Sarah, but her surname is unknown. I searched persistently for her maiden name, but I only found the one church record, which simply called her Sarah. The church record says William’s wife, Sarah is the mother of Elizabeth, Sarah, and Hester. Most likely, she’s also mother to the younger children. One source says William may have had a wife prior to Sarah, but I haven’t been able to verify if the source is authentic. 4) William Hasey was not married to Sarah Seward. Sarah Seward lived near the Haseys, but she was married to someone else. My father says Sarah Seward's Probate provides proof that she was not William Hasey’s wife. In it, she lists her children - but the names and dates don't match with the Haseys. 5) This error, that William Hasey was supposedly married to Sarah Seward, has been copied extensively. But I spoke with the person who started the rumor that William Hasey’s wife was Sarah Seward – he posted that on a bulletin board at Ancestry.com, I believe. He proposed it as mere speculation (because there was someone named Sarah Seward who lived in the same neighborhood as William Hasey) - but never did any research at all. It turns out that Sarah Seward could not be William Hasey's wife (see #4) but the error has been widely replicated. 6) There are other discrepancies, probably minor things that can be straightened out if we compare notes and check citations. Thanks so much for doing all this.

Given the very detailed and researched account of William and his wife Sarah provided by "M Hasey" (above), why hasn't "Sarah Seward" been changed to "Sarah Unknown"? If the Sarah Seward name is being cited based on unresearched speculation, why does that prevail when compared to the real research done by "M Hasey" and his father? It seems that protocol would suggest "Sarah Unknown" would be the preferred route until a legitimate source can prove the identity of William's wife.

I don't believe he was born in Massachusetts in 1619. (Too early!)

If he was born in 1619 it was in the British Isles or Europe (probably England).

I am editing this profile to eliminate the unsourced fiction that he was born in Massachusetts.

What is the birthplace? There isn't a Chelsea in Suffolk, England. Should it be just Suffolk, England?
