Biography

Bellingham Herald, The (WA) — Sunday, November 18, 2012 February 27, 1940 - November 14, 2012 Bruce Hassebrock, age 72 passed away peacefully in Bellingham on November 14, 2012 surrounded by family, friends, and staff at Whatcom Hospice House.

Bruce, one of six children, was born in Richardton, North Dakota to Carl and Laura Hassebrock. The family moved to Enumclaw, WA in 1943. In 1949 they returned to ND; and he attended Hebron grade school. The family returned to Enumclaw in 1950. One year later they moved to Whatcom County where Bruce attended Ferndale Junior High and graduated from Ferndale High School in 1958. Bruce attended college and fought fires for the U. S. Forest Service.

In 1961, Bruce went to work for Puget Sound Shipyard. In 1963 he was drafted and served in the US Army, during which time he married Lynette Anderson. In 1964, while stationed in Augsburg, Germany their first daughter, Lori, was born. After returning home in 1965, Bruce returned to work for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, completing his 4 year appren- ticeship as a journeyman pipefitter. In 1967 their second daughter, Kim, was born in Bremerton, WA. In 1971, Bruce accepted a job with US Customs and the family moved to Blaine, WA.

In 1989 Bruce remarried to Marie (Kocher) Hassebrock. Bruce retired from US Customs in 2001, with 43 years of government service, forming many lasting friendships. Bruce was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

His death was preceded by his father Carl Hassebrock; mother Laura (Kinnischtzke) Hassebrock; brother Jerry Hassebrock; wife Marie (Kocher) Hassebrock; mother-in-law Marie Gonzales; brother-in-law Jack Petterson. He is survived by sister Glorian Hubbard and husband Bob (Ojai, CA); sister Joyce Petterson (Kirkland); sister-in-law Carol Hassebrock and husband Gary Haveman (Lynden); brother Glenn Hassebrock and wife Betty (Port Orchard); brother Jim Hassebrock and wife Bobbie (Port Orchard); father-in-law Angel Gonzales (Custer); first wife and special friend, Lynn Thomas (Ferndale). Daughters Lori Bellville and son-in-law Randy; Kim Lillejord and son-in-law Chris. Step Sons Brian Kocher and daughter-in-law Sarah; Gary Kocher and daughter-in-law Christy. Step Daughter Sue Kocher and son-in-law Mike. Bruce had 18 grandchildren, which he enjoyed countless hours with at the beach, on his boat, and watching their sporting events.

The family is grateful for the kind care and support he received in his last days at the Hospice House in Bellingham, WA. A celebration of life, will take place at Christ Lutheran Church, 5904 Vista Drive, Ferndale, WA on Monday, December 17th, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Whatcom Hospice House, 2806 Douglas Ave. Bellingham, WA.
