John De Courcy Hathaway was born on 19 February 1899 in Leichhardt, New South Wales, Australia [1], the son of Frederick James Hathaway and Rebecca Wilkinson and the brother of Grace Kathleen (Hathaway) Holcombe, Frederick Gilbert Vernon Hathaway, Gladys Caroline (Hathaway) Cattley, Lytton Hathaway and Laura Beatrice (Hathaway) Green.
John served in the First World War in the Australian Defence Force. He enlisted on 5 March 1917 as an 18 year old, and served as a Trooper in the Camel Corps 11th Inforcements Regiment in the Middle East, embarking Sydney on 9 May and debarked the Suez on 20 June 1917. By the 31 August 1918 John was a Driver with the 1st Light Horse Signaling Troop. After spending time in Malta he was returned to Australia, leaving Cairo on 10 July and arriving on 10 August 1919. He married Edna Ethel Elvy on 15 February 1923 at Manly, New South Wales, Australia [4] and their sons were Ronald De Courcy Hathaway and John De Courcy Hathaway.
John died on 17 November 1964 in St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia [5][6].
