His birth year is estimated as 1888. It is noted that John Jr. and his father were born in Louisiana, but his mother was born in Georgia. John Jr. works as a laborer doing odd jobs. He is able to read and write.[1]
The 1920 U.S. Census lists John Jr. as a 33 year old married mulatto man living with his wife and three children in Bunkie, Avoyelles, Louisiana. His birth year is estimaed as 1887. It is noted that John Jr. and his parents were all born in Louisiana. He works as a farmer on a general farm and is able to read and write.[2]
The 1930 U.S Census lists "Jonnie" as a 47 year old married negro man living with his wife, his widowed grandmother, Kitty Simpson, and five children in Police Jury Ward 10, Avoyelles, Louisiana. They rent their home. John was 23 at the time of his marriage. He has not been enrolled in school in the past year but is able to read and write. John and his parents were born in Louisiana. He works as a farmer on a general farm.[3]
The 1940 U.S. Census lists "John Hawken" as a 52 year old married negro man living with his wife and three adult children in Police Jury Ward 9, Avoyelles, Louisiana. It appears that John's oldest son, James, and his family live next door. John and his family rent their home for $5 per month. It is noted that John attended school until grade five. He works as a farmer.[4]
