Early Life

Lillie Mae HendersonLillie Mae Henderson entered the world on June 9, 1901,[1][2] in the town of Laurel Hill, in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. Her parents, James Boyette Henderson and Ledora Paul, welcomed her as their third child among a total of ten offspring. Tragically, her eldest brother passed away around the same time Lillie was born.
In 1910, the Henderson family resided in a rented home in Laurel Hill, Florida. Their household included six children, and Lillie’s father worked as a carpenter.[3] During this period, Laurel Hill boasted a single, modest one-room schoolhouse. Lillie Mae attended school up to the 3rd grade. She was able to read and write despite the limited educational resources. [4]

Marriage and Family

Everett Rufus Milligan

On December 29, 1918, 17-year-old Lillie May and 19-year-old Everett "Rufus" Milligan exchanged vows in De Funiak Springs, Walton County, Florida.[5] [6] Following their marriage, the couple settled in Munson, Santa Rosa, Florida, residing next to Lillie May's cousin, "Bob" Henderson), and his family. During this period, Everett worked as a laborer.[7]
During their marriage, Lillie May and Everett "Rufus" Milligan welcomed a son and daughter into their family. However, after approximately five years of marriage, the couple decided to part ways and pursued divorce.

John B Bryant

Around 1923 or 1924, at the age of 21, Lillie May entered into marriage with 62-year-old John B Bryant. Despite the significant age difference, they welcomed their first child together around 1924. The couple resided in Blountstown, Calhoun, Florida, where they had three children. Additionally, John's son from a previous marriage, James Claudie Bryant, also lived with them.
Their union ended when John passed away on January 24, 1930, in Blountstown, Calhoun, Florida.[8]

James Claudie Bryant

Following John's death, Lillie May continued to reside in Blountstown, raising her five children. John's son, Claudie Bryant, remained with her as a roomer.[9]
In 1935, Lillie May still resided in Calhoun, Florida, with Claudie listed as her step-son. Additionally, six children lived in the household, including the youngest, Estell Bryant, who was the daughter of Claudie and Lillie.[10] Lillie and James Claudie Bryant expanded their family, welcoming two more children before they officially married on December 9, 1939, in Calhoun, Florida.[11].
In 1940, the family remained in the same location during the tail-end of the Great Depression.[4] Claudie, who was paralyzed on half of his body, was listed as unemployed but had income from "other" sources, possibly due to his physical condition affecting his job prospects.[12] so it is also possible that interfered with his job prospects at the time.
By 1942, Claudie seemed to have secured employment, listing John Clendennon as his employer. [12] In 1945, the family had welcomed another child, bringing the total number of children in the household to five. Claudie worked as a laborer, while Lillie's son from her previous marriage also lived nearby with his family.[13]
The couple welcomed their final child in 1947, and by 1950, they still resided in the same location. Claudie reported working 16 hours the week before the census, painting houses to support the family. [14]
In 1952, while giving birth to Lillie's granddaughter, Lillie's daughter, Beatrice (Bryant) Adkins, suffered complications during delivery. Sadly, Beatrice passed away one week later.
Their marriage ends on 27 Aug 1963 when Claudie passes away.

Death and Burial

Lillie died on 14 June 1972 in Blountstown, Calhoun County, Florida, aged 71. She was buried in Nettle Ridge Cemetery, Blountstown, Calhoun County, Florida.[1][2]

Research Notes

Her Florida Death Records state her last name as Page when she passed away. [1] However, I can find no marriage supporting the name change. Additionally, her headstone[2] and obituary call her Lillie May Bryant.
On the 1920 Census[7], Lillie's race is listed as Black. However, every other census lists her race as white.
