John was a farmer and carpenter in Boone County, Missouri, building houses and barns. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Ann (Brown) Hendricks, and the brother of Jesse, William, Alfred, Mary, Clara Belle and Everett. John did not marry. He continued to live on the family farm with his unmarried siblings, widowed father, and niece, Vernelle.
