Missouri Hennigan born Aug. 3 1917 in Merryville, Beauregard Parish La. and died Nov. 19 1939 in Merryville. (h.) Jewel Hennigan was last child of Allen and Ida Hennigan. My ggrandmother Louisa Jane Eaves Hennigan died (March 17 1880) shortly after the birth of Allen Isaac, her fourth son. James Emanuel Michael Hennigan brought Cordelia Dunning, a beautiful Afro-American (as described by Granny) into his home to be a nurse for Allen and to help raise his other 3 boys. Cordelia ended up being his mistress or common law wife. Many stories surround the circumstances of her leaving home or her death. One historian in Merryville tells that peer pressure was so great that J.E.M. Hennigan sent her away. Others in family tell that the other Hennigan men turned over a huge clothes closet on her so she would meet her demise. Cordelia is buried in the Hennigan Cemetery with her death date as Aug. 20 1891. Never the less we are blessed with 3 more children of James and Cordelia. Those children are (a.) Chiles Hennigan was born May 13 1883 and died Feb. 24, 1952. Chiles married Mary Elverene Trussell born 1877 in Miss. and died Oct 15 1958. Mary was a daughter of James William Trussell born Jan 12 1846 in Ala. and Mary Jolly born 1843 in Miss. I locate Chiles on 1910 Vernon Parish Census as 26 years old, white male, born La. With him is wife Rene age 33 born Miss., and daughter Vergie born La. age 4, and son Lloyd, born La., age 3. La. Children of Chiles and Mary were James Lloyd Hennigan, Vergie Hennigan, Elonzo Hennigan, Ethel Hennigan, and Grace Hennigan. (b.) Bloomie Hennigan was second child born June 14 1884 in Merryville, La. and married John P. Yawn. Children of this marriage were Goldie, Lufkin, and Harvey. (c.) Arv (R.V.) Hennigan was born Jan. 20 1888 in Merryville, La. and died April 24 1952. R.V. married Jessie Ann Montgomery born July 23 1892 on July 16 1909 and died Sept. 17 1977. Children of this marriage were Viola Nancy Hennigan, Dorothy Mae Hennigan, Mabel Hennigan, James Virgle Hennigan, George Percy Hennigan, and Jack Dempsey Hennigan. Cordelia and JEM had 4 children together, not 3, according to legal paperwork he signed legitimizing all children as his by Cordelia...The missing child is MARY ELLER (or Ellen, or Ella) Hennigan born Feb. 22, 1889. The names are recorded, in this document, as MARY ELLA, Bloomie as BLOOM M.D. born June 14, 1884, Arv (Robert Virgil) as A.R.V. born Jan. 28, 1888, and Chiles (Chlid H.) as CHILD born May 13, 1882. The document is printed, not typed, in someone's hand. It states, as well, the following: "...Above named children was his own borned children and that they was conceived and borned in his dwelling house while living in a state of concubin, with Cordeli Duning living at and in my house as housekeeper, being able to make marriage contract, both mother and father, but neglected to do so, I take this opportunity to right the children their mother being deceased Aug. 20, 1891." The document is signed by JEM and Henry Dunning (the father of Cordelia). Obviously the grammar and spelling suffer, so the spellings of children's and Cordelia's names are obviously suspect... Document in the possesion of John and Karen Sanders(My parents are Alma Linda Hennigan and Leroy Anderson. Linda's parents were Alvin "Alva" Hennigan (twin of Bert) and Lola Mildred Pepper. Alva's parent's were obviously Veretta and JEM.)

LENORA SEZ Beauregard Daily News December 4, 2005 MERRYVILLE

By 1907, Merryville was on a boom with hundreds rushing there. The principal sawmills at Merryville were The American Lumber Co, capacity 135,000 feet daily; C. L. Smith mill, capacity 50,000 feet daily; Baxter mill, 15,000 feet; J. E. M. Hennigan combination mill, 15,000 feet; and Sabine River mill, 30,000 feet daily. When the J. E. Hennigan mill burned down in the fall of 1908, it was a disastrous fire that affected Merryvilles economic well-being. It had been the largest cotton gin in town that ginned most of the neighborhoods cotton between August and November. On Saturdays the mill ground only corn meal, and it sawed rough lumber the remainder of the year.
