Mary Alice Hensley was born April 22 1859 in Wayne Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). She was the daughter of Alexander Hensley and Mary Fry.
Though her death record states that she was born April 22 1857 in Boyd Co., Kentucky, this year is incongruent with her age in all other records in her life. According to her marriage record she was born in Wayne Co., and her husband was born in Boyd Co.
On December 20, 1882, when she was 23 years old, Mary Alice married Nathan Benjamin Colgrove, a 25 year old farmer, in Wayne Co. According to their marriage record she was from Wayne Co., and he was from Boyd Co., Kentucky.

They had the following children together:
She was enumerated in the 1900 Census, age 41, living in the Butler District of Wayne Co., with her husband Nathan P (42), and their children Olena (17), James (10), Bennie (8), Luvonda (8), John H (6), and William J. (3). According to this census, she had given birth to 8 children total, with 6 still living. She is also unable to read and write.

She passed away on October 24, 1943 in Cabell Co., from chronic myocarditis. She was 84 years old.
