John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In the state of Massachusetts alone, eleven men named John Herrick are listed in "United States Rosters of Revolutionary War Soldiers and Sailors, 1775-1783."[2] Most, but not all of the soldiers, are listed with their town of origin. The entry for John Herrick, Andover, states that he was a private, serving with Captain Benjamin Ames's company of Minute-men, Colonel James Frye's Regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 7 days; also, same company, return of men at Cambridge, May 17, 1775; also, same company, return dated Oct 6, 1775, an order for a bounty coat or its equivalent in money was dated Cambridge, Nov. 14, 1775.
