Biography

SURNAME

Surname: Highsaw / Hisaw / Hysaw
Frederick's headstone is spelled Highsaw.
Highsaw is also the spelling passed down to Frederick's grandsons.
The spelling of Frederick's surname changes throughout his life.
The same is true for several other related Hisaw/Highsaw branches.
This could have been due to the very low literacy rates during the 19th century.
The spelling HISAW, appears to be the most common among all branches.

BIRTH / DEATH

Birth Date: about 1805, based on the following:
1) born between 1801-1810, per census in 1840, age 30-39
2) born 1808 KY, per census in 1850, age 42
3) born 1806 TN, per census in 1860, age 54
4) born 1805 TN, per census in 1870, age 65
5) born 11-Nov-1798, per cemetery headstone
6) his headstone date appears exaggerated, based on all census records.
Birth Place: TN or KY, based on the following:
1) either TN or KY, per Frederick's own census
2) his daughter Margaret's census says father born TX or TN or MS
3) his daughter Elizabeth's census says father born KY or unknown
4) possible birthplace: Cumberland Co. KY, per undocumented source
Death Date: 6 Dec 1878, per cemetery headstone
Death Place: Texas. Probably in Fannin or Delta County.
1) Fred's last census is in Fannin County, but his headstone is in Delta County.
2) Fred shares a headstone with his daughter Elizabeth.
3) It appears that daughter Elizabeth, moved to Delta County after Fred's death,
.... which is based on Elizabeth's tax records, and Elizabeth’s son James.

PARENTAGE

Frederick Highsaw is probably son of James Hisaw.
There are 3 Hisaw men (George, Andrew, James) in Overton County, Tennessee who are the correct age in 1820 (age 45+) to be father of Frederick.
There are also 3 different sons named Frederick Hisaw, who are about the same age. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that each of the elder HISAW (George, Andrew, James) had a son named Frederick.
The father of our Frederick has been identified, through the process of elimination, as there are no documents with absolute proof.
George has been eliminated as a potential father of our Frederick, because of George's 1842 WILL, that names sons Fred & Emanuel (and others). Frederick & Emanuel both moved to Barry County, Missouri, where they are living close together on the 1850 census. The 1872 Bond for the Estate of Frederick Highsaw (in Barry Co., MO) was secured by Emanuel Highsaw.
Andrew has been eliminated as potential father of our Frederick, because Andrew's son Frederick remained in Fentress Co., TN for the remainder of his life. This Frederick's 1840 census is next to his father Andrew Hisaw.
James, the remaining Hisaw, is assumed by default, to be the father of our Frederick. James cannot be located on 1830/1840 censuses, so assume he has died. Our Frederick is located in Carroll Co. TN on 1840 census, living fairly close to George Hisaw (his uncle). Our Frederick's wife, has Deed records from her father, showing they were living in 1841 Carroll Co., TN and 1843 Fannin Co. TX, and that she was the new owner of one slave. This is consistent with our Fred's census locations, and also his tax records for one slave.
The 3 elder HISAW families on census are:
(transcriptions are from ancestry.com)
Note: the page for James is very faint; it might say David (not James).
The 3 Frederick Hisaw/Highsaw on census are:
1) 1840 Barry, Missouri, Frederick Hysaw, age 30-39, wife, 1 girl, 3 boys
2) 1840 Fentress, Tenn., Frederic Highsaw, age 30-39, no wife, 2 boys
3) 1840 Carroll, Tenn., Frederick Hisaw, age 30-39, wife, 3 girls, 1 slave
Creation of counties:
1806--Overton County was established 11 Sep 1806 from Jackson County.
1821--Carroll County was created 7 Nov 1821 from Chickasaw Indian Lands.
1823--Fentress County was created 28 Nov 1823 from Overton & Morgan Co.

MARRIAGE

Groom: Frederick Highsaw
Bride: Mary Martha Dalton
Marriage Date: about 1834, based on the following:
1) married after 1830, where wife Mary is still with her parents.
2) married before 1835, per birth of oldest known child Elizabeth
Marriage Place: probably in Tennessee, based on the following:
1) Frederick & Mary both have records indicating a TN residence.
2) Their oldest child has a TN birthplace.
About wife:
There are 2 deeds showing that Mary is the daughter of Carter Dalton.
It also implies Frederick & Mary moved from TN to TX, between 1841 & 1843.
(Deed abstracts found on various websites, but cannot locate the actual deeds)
1) Deed Book C, Fentress County, Tennessee, page 234, dated 2 Nov 1841, Carter Dalton of Fentress County gives to his daughter, Mary M. Wysaw, of Carroll County, Tennessee, a negro woman.
2) Deed Book B, Fannin County, Texas, page 96, dated 3 Nov 1841, recorded 21 Dec 1843, Carter Dalton of Fentress Co., Tenn. to Mary M. Hynson of Carroll County, Tenn. for love and affection to my daughter. Woman - Catherine and her child Rebeccas

FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Frederick most likely had many siblings, based on the 1820 census of James Hisaw (father), which shows 12 children. Frederick is one of those children, and Jesse is possibly another. The others have not been identified.
It is possible that some of the children assigned to Andrew (uncle), actually belong to James (father). I have not reviewed all the children of Andrew to know what evidence exists. However, George Hisaw (uncle) has a WILL that names his own children.
Jesse Hisaw/Highsaw is a possible brother of our Frederick.
Jesse moved from TN, to Winston Co., Mississippi, before 1840 census.
Notice that a Jesse Highsaw, has an 1836 tax record in Carroll Co., Tennessee.
The tax record is the one-and-only record of Jesse Highsaw being in Tennessee.
Several descendants of Jesse Highsaw later moved to Texas.
There is a 1894 marriage in Delta Co. TX, for William Highsaw and Lillie Barker.
Delta County, Texas is also where our Frederick was buried in 1878.
William Hisaw appears to be son of (Thadeus<Jesse<James).
William's SS application: b.1875 in Winston Co. MS, to parents Thadeus H Hisaw & Mary Duncan
John T Highsaw, age 24, has an 1880 census in Grayson Co., Texas.
Grayson borders Fannin Co. TX, where Frederick's family was living thru 1870.
John T Highsaw appears to be son of (Benjamin<Jesse<James).
There are also descendants of Benjamin<Jesse<James, who lived in Hunt Co. TX.
Fred's grandson, James C Highsaw, has a cousin (Joseph M Highsaw) with him on 1910 census. James was an only child; so obviously, it was not his 1st cousin.
Joseph M Highsaw appears to be son of (David<Robert<George), a 2nd cousin to our Frederick. Joseph and his father David, were living in 1850 Gibson Co. TN, then Denton Co. TX in 1870.
Denton and Fannin are in northeast Texas, where Frederick living thru 1870.

CHILDREN

Notice that Fred & Mary's 1840 census, shows a total of 3 girls born in 183x.
Only one of these girls remain by the 1850 census.
The 2 youngest children (names unknown) probably died before the age of 15.
My interpretation of Fred & Mary's census 1850, 1860,1870, shows 5 daughters:
1) Anne Elizabeth ....... b. about 1835 TN
2) Martha Margaret ... b. about 1842 TN
3) Mary ........................ b. about 1844 TX
4) Louisa Missouri ...... b. about 1848 TX
5) Marietta .................. b. about 1850 TX
Other interpretations show a different arrangement of girl's names.
Explanation of girls #2 and #3 (from above):
The 1860 census has "Martha M", age 17 TN, living with parents, while
"Mary Highsaw", age 15 TN, is next door with Milam family (from KY) in 1860.
Therefore... Martha & Mary, are clearly two separate names.
The children of Margaret, refer to her as either Margaret or Martha.
I cannot find any records or documents, where Margaret uses middle initial "P".
Notes about Margaret (Martha):
Margaret has a marriage record to Alvis Goin, in Aug-1860 (before 1860 census).
The 1860 enumeration date was 17-Sep-1860, which may have confused matters. Instructions (not always followed) are to list family as of Jun-1860, which was BEFORE marriage. Notice that Martha's husband is duplicated; once with Martha, and another with his own parents.
Notes on girls #4 & #5:
Louisa & Marietta on 1860 census with parents, but only one remains by 1870.
Assume one of them has married (or died) before the 1870 census.
The age of "Missouri" on 1870 census, indicates she is Louisa.
I cannot locate 3 youngest girls (Mary, Louisa, Marietta) on/after marriage.
Identity of Frederick & Mary's children:
1) Anne Elizabeth, never married, died in Delta Co., Texas
2) Martha Margaret, had a 2nd marriage to George F Wilson, they lived in Okla.
3) Mary, possibly married a WEST
4) Louisa, possibly died young, or possibly married a WELCH or LANKFORD
5) Marietta, possibly died young, or possibly married a WELCH or LANKFORD
Notes:
Some genealogies show Marietta/Missouri married a LANKFORD,
but I cannot find any evidence of a LANKFORD marriage.
Fred & Mary have 3 grandchildren (James, Robert, Alice) on Fred's 1870 census.
Who's children:
1) James has close association to Elizabeth, thru land records and 1880 census.
2) Margaret(Martha) refers to James & Robert as nephews in 1915.
3) Robert & James not brothers. James is referred to as Robert's cousin in 1936.
4) Elizabeth not mother of Robert or Alice; her 1900 census says 1 child, 1 living.
5) Louisa not the mother of Robert, because Louisa is too young.
6) Cannot locate Robert or Alice in 1880, but James w/ mother "Anna E. Hysow"
7) Alice might be "Lottie A Welch" on 1880 census of Elizabeth "Anna E. Hysow"
8) Lottie A Welch & Mary E Welch are NIECES in 1880 census of "Anna E. Hysow"
9) James has an aunt, Mary West, visiting from Fort Worth TX in 1912.
10) There are several newspaper clippings of Mary West visiting nieces & nephews, but never children.
Conclusion about Fred & Mary's grandchildren:
1) James is son of Anne Elizabeth Highsaw.
2) Robert is probably son of either Mary or Marietta.
3) Alice is probably daughter of either Marietta or Louisa.
4) Lottie A Welch, is probably daughter of either Marietta or Louisa.
5) Mary E Welch, is probably daughter of either Marietta or Louisa.
