He was named after his uncle Tobias Troppmann, who was married to his mother's sister and served as his godfather[1].
Tobias had a child out of wedlock in 1852 with Kaimling native Anna Messer, a daughter Barbara. A year later, the three of them immigrated to the United States, departing Hamburg and arriving in NYC on July 14, 1853 aboard the ship "Anna"[2].
After settling in Buffalo, New York, Tobias and Anna had 6 more children:
Tobias passed away on 28 August 1903 in Buffalo. He was buried at the United German and French Cemetery in Cheektowaga[3].
His death notice in the Buffalo Courier newspaper on 30 Aug 1903[4]:
HILBURGER, Tobias, 84 years, No. 310 Herman Street, August 28th.
A Michael Hilburger and his brother Jacob immigrated with Tobias and his wife on the same ship in 1853[5]; he was born in Leuchtenberg, near Kaimling, and was likely a distant cousin, but a common ancestor could not be found with surviving Catholic parish records. It is worth noting that Tobias' mother-in-law was from Leuchtenberg Parish, so his wife had family there.
A marriage record has not been found yet for Tobias and Anna. The Diocese of Regensburg archives did a search and turned up nothing. Anna is called "Anna Messer" on their immigration record, so perhaps they married in the United States, or maybe they never did.
He is sometimes called Matthias instead of Tobias on various records in both Kaimling and Buffalo records. But both his birth and death records call him Tobias. He had a brother Matthias who passed away young and may have used that as an alias. Some U.S. records also list him as Thomas.
