Bobell Hildreth was born on 07 May 1898 in Alabama, United States. She was the daughter of Henry Walter Hildreth (1869-1933) and Lillie Ann (Skipper) Hildreth (1872-1963).[1][2]
Bobell was 2 years old when the 1900 United States Census was taken. She and an older sister were living with their parents in Centerville, Coffee County, Alabama. A hired farm laborer was also a member of their household.[3]
When the 1910 United States Census was taken Bobell was 11 years old. She and 4 of her siblings were living in Centerville with their parents.[4]
Bobell attended the State Normal School at Troy, Alabama. At the time "The Great War" was just coming to an end, but the world was suffering through an influenza pandemic. In 1918, the newspaper included a note that Bobell Hildreth had returned home from school "...on account of the flu."[5] She graduated with a teaching degree in May 1919.[6]
After her graduation, Bobell returned to Centerville and was enumerated in the household of her parents on the 1920 United States Census, along with 5 of her siblings. (Note: Surname in table spelled as indexed by FamilySearch. The enumerator's handwriting was difficult to decipher.) In 1920, Bobell was 21 years old and working as a teacher in the public school.[7]
When her sister Jewell was married in 1921, Bobell and her first cousin Verdie Hildreth entertained guests with a musical program in which Bobell played the violin.[8]
She was hired by the Andalusia City School System as a third-grade teacher for the 1921-1922 session. In 1922, it was noted in the newspaper that she had been assigned as a second-grade teacher at the Andalusia Elementary School.[9] When the teaching assignments were made for the 1922-1923 session, Bobell Hildreth placed with 1st-graders.[10][11]
Bobell was married to Conwell Jones. The applied for their marriage license between 22 December 1924 and the marriage took place on 25 December 1924 in New Brockton, Coffee County, Alabama.[12][13][14][2]
She continued teaching for the Andalusia City School System. For the 1925-26 session, she was assigned to teach second grade. (No records found beyond this school session.)[15]
Bobell and Conwell Jones were the parents of at least 2 children--Travis Conwell Jones and Doris Hildreth Jones.[2][16][17]
Bobell, Conwell, and their son Travis C. were enumerated on the 1930 United States Census living in Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama.[18]
The 1940 United States Census recorded that Bobell Jones was a kindergarten teacher. She, her husband Conwell, and their two children Travis and Doris, were still living in Andalusia. Their home was located at 216 Oak Street.[19]
Bobell and Conwell Jones were still living in Andalusia when the 1950 United States Census was taken. Their home was located at 302 College Street.[20]
Bobell established the Jones Kindergarten in Andalusia, Alabama. Bobell continued to teach kindergarten until the very day of her death in 1959.[21]
On the evening of 19 May 1959, when her 1958-1959 kindergarten class was being graduated, Bobell Hildreth became ill during the ceremony. She died four hours later.[1][2] The cause of her illness and death was determined to be a heart attack. Following her death, her husband donated the playground and classroom equipment from the Jones Kindergarten to the Bethel AME Church to be used for their kindergarten program for black children.
Her home newspaper in Andalusia, Alabama published a memorial to her after her death. It was written, "Neighborhood children, we have witnessed, gained polish, understanding and love for learning through the careful guidance of Mrs. Jones. To Mrs. Jones, every child was an individual. Each of her pupils received treatment as an individual...Bobell Hildreth Jones sparked the great adventure of gaining knowledge among hundreds of six-year-olds." Parents of the students in her last kindergarten class suggested that books be given to the Andalusia Library in hopes that a special corner could be dedicated to her memory.[22]
Bobell Hildreth Jones was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama.[2][23]
