Biography

This profile is part of the Hildreth Name Study.

Jesse Burl Hildreth was born on 15 July 1905 in Conecuh County, Alabama, United States.[1] He was the son of John Daniel Hildreth (1858-1930) and Mary Jane (Pate) Hildreth (1870-1953).

He was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1910 United States Census. He was four years old. He and his family were living in Conecuh County, Alabama. When the 1920 United States Census was taken, Jesse was living in the household of his older brother Perry Tyson Hildreth (1897-1979) in Conecuh County, Alabama. His brother had taken over the role of head of household even though his parents were still alive.[2][3]

When the 1930 United States Census was taken, Jesse was living in the household of his brother Johnnie Hildreth in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama. Jesse was a machinist in an automobile shop (probably the one owned by his brother Johnnie.)[4]

His father, John Daniel Hildreth, died in 1930. In his obituary, Jesse Burl was mentioned as "J. V. Hildreth" of Opelika, Lee County, Alabama.[5]

Jesse Hildreth was married to Birmer Rebecca Godwin on 05 July 1933 in Wetumpka, Elmore County, Alabama.[6] Birmer was the widow of Jesse's brother Johnnie Ira Hildreth who was killed in an accident in 1933. Jesse adopted Joe Fred Hildreth, the child Johnnie and Birmer had adopted. Jesse and Birmer were the parents of at least five additional children. Joe Fred, James B., Evelyn R., and Billy Sam are listed in their household on the 1940 United States Census. Jesse's mother, Mary Jane Pate Hildreth was living with them. The family was living in Conecuh County, Alabama and Jesse was working as a salesman for a retail grocery.[7]

Jesse Burl Hildreth's last place of residence was in Opelika, Alabama. He passed away on 20 February 1949 in a hospital in Fulton County, Georgia. He was 43 years old.[8] He was buried in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Paul, Conecuh County, Alabama.[9][10]
