Ethel Hodder was born on 23 November 1880 in Greytown, Wellington, New Zealand, daughter of Walter George Hodder (1856–1933) and Ann Donald (1856–1927).^[1]

Ethel (20) married Ernest William James Cundy (24) (born on 18 July 1877 in Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand; son of William Cundy and Alice Jane (A'Court) Cundy) on 16 September 1901 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.^[2] Their children were :
