Biography

Emanuel was born in 1785. He was the son of Peter Hoffman of Bull Swamp in Orangeburg County. Censuses show that Peter had at least 10 sons, all of which apparently moved west, except for Emanuel. Records for descendants of Emanuel show that they continued to live in Bull Swamp Township for several more generations.

On 16 Aug 1816, a survey for Emanuel Hufman of 336 acres in Lexington County, near Bull Swamp shows that his property is adjacent to properties owned by his brother Daniel Huffman, and his mother "widow" Huffman.[1]

In 1820 Emanuel is a resident of Orangeburg County.[2]

In 1830 Emanuel is a resident of Orangeburg County.[3] This is the last record found for Emanuel Huffman.

In 1850, his wife, Sarah (Livingston) Huffman was enumerated in Orangeburg County, between the Santee River and the Edisto River, north of the Belville Road.[4] Sarah is in the household of her son John. The absence of any other Huffman children may indicate that Sarah's husband, Emanuel Huffman probably died shortly after the 1830 census was taken.

Probable known children of Emanuel Huffman and his wife, Sarah (Livingston) Huffman, include:

  1. Susannah Hoffman (1807-1857)
  2. Emanuel Hoffman Jr. (born abt. 1808)
  3. Frederick Hoffman (1810-1860)
  4. John Hoffman (1813-1882)
  5. Jacob Hoffman (1826-1868)
