Biography

John was born in 1778. He passed away after 1860.

John appears to be the son of Peter Hoffman of Orangeburg, South Carolina. The 1790 and 1800 census shows that Peter had at least 10 sons in his household. All but one of his identified children appear to have moved on the Alabama, some to Autauga County, and later, some to Macon County, AL. Historical accounts indicate that some of the early German settlers in Autauga County later removed to Macon County. It is possible that some of the Macon County Huffmans were in Autauga County first. For example, all John's early Alabama records are in Autauga County, but his last Alabama record is the marriage of his daughter Harriet Huffman to Redick Tarvin in Macon County on 28 Feb 1837.

In 1810, John is resident in Lexington County, South Carolina.[1] On 28 Mary 1816, a survey was completed for James Mellard in Lexington County showing adjacent properties to be owned by John Huffman and two of his brothers, Peter Huffman, and Daniel Huffman.[2]

On 9 Apr 1825, John Huffman. through his assignee Benjamin Arnett, received a patent for 160 acres in Autauga County, Alabama.[3] That the patent was given to John's assignee suggests that John had not yet completed his move to Autauga County at this time. By 1830 John was a resident in Autauga County where he was enumerated in Capt. Adair's District.[4]

John's daughter, Harriet Huffman married Redick Tarvin on 28 Feb 1837 in Macon County, Alabama.[5] This is the last record found for John in Alabama. By 1850 John is living in Johnson Township, Union County, Arkansas.[6]

In 1860, John, age 82 years, is living with his daughter and son-in-law (Harriet Huffman and Redick Tarvin) in Jackson Township, Calhoun County, Arkansas.[7] This is the last record found for John. He passed away sometime after this date.
