Biography

• A source to verify Mary's exact date of birth has not been found. The United States Federal Censuses for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 collected ages (see links below) and using those numbers it is estimated that Mary was born in about 1834 in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois [1] to John Hogaboom and Abagail Hopkins in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois. The "History of LaSalle County" by Elmer Baldwin claimed that John had 14 children - Mary was the 3rd of 13 of the children born to John and Abagail who have been identified, 8 girls and 5 boys: Adelia (1828), Emily (1833), Mary (1834), Marvin (1837), Edgar (1837), Charlotte (1838), Caroline (1840), Frances (1844), George (1845), Lorenzo (1847), Augusta (1848), Wilburn (1850) and Celestia (1853).
• The 1850 United States Federal Census [2] [3] [4] shows John (51). Abigail (40), Adelia (22), Emily (17), Mary (15), Charlotte (12), Caroline (9), Frances (6), and Augusta (3) living in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois where John is a farmer and shows ownership of $1,000.00 in real estate.
• Mary wed Francis Ocean for the first of two times on January 16th 1856 in La Salle County, Illinois License # 2326) [5] [6] [7]. Their marriage produced 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, Delphine (1858), Charles (1860), Byron (1861), Josephine (1866), Lilly (1869), and Francis (1871).
• The 1860 United States Federal Census [8] [9] [10] [11] shows Francis (29), Mary (26), Delphine (4), and Charles (1) living in Owego, Livingston, Illinois where Francis is a farmer who owns real estate valued at $600.00 and a personal estate of $150.00.
• Mary's mother, Abigail, died on June 18th 1864 in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois Find A Grave: Memorial #44736193. After her death Caroline's father married again on October 22nd 1865. His second wife was the widow Harriet (Austin?) Brooks (as noted in Abigail's Find a Grave memorial).
• Mary's sister, Emily, died in April 1866 (no source). Emily's husband then married Mary and Emily's sister, Charlotte, on May 28th 1866 [12].
• The 1870 United States Federal Census [13] [14] [15] shows Francis (48), Mary (34), Delphine (12), and Charles (10), Byron (8), Josaphene (6) and Lily (1) living in Owego, Livingston, Illinois where Francis is a farmer who owns real estate valued at $1,200.00 and a personal estate of $250.00.
• Mary's sister, Caroline, died on May 23rd 1873 in La Salle County, Illinois [16].
• Mary's father, John, died on February 28th 1879 in Ottawa, La Salle. Illinois [17].
• The 1880 United States Federal Census [18] [19] [20] we see Mary (37) shown as a widow who along with her daughter Dela (Delphine) Bishop (22) are living with Mary's brother, Marvin (35) on Canal Street in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois where Marvin works as a carpenter. (Frank appears in a September 22nd 1887 marriage record so Mary is not a widow).
• Mary and John W. Walker are married on May 10th 1883 (License #362) in La Salle County, Illinois :[21] [22]. How this marriage ended is not yet known, but it lasted less than 5 years. Whether John Walker died during this time or had a new life after his marriage to Mary is unknown.
• A June 27th 1884 record shows Francis marrying Harriet Hill Tillson in Logan Harrison, Iowa [23].
• Mary and Francis Ocean were wed for the second time on September 22nd 1887 at Denison, Crawford, Iowa (License # 944) in a ceremony officiated by R. R. Montgomery, Justice of the Peace [24] [25] [26].
• Mary's sister, Augusta, died on September 26th 1887 in Coffeyville, Montgomery, Kansas [27].
• Mary is believed to have passed away on January 19th 1901 in Burlington, Coffee, Kansas (no source).
• Francis married again on November 14th 1901 in Denison, Crawford, Iowa (License # 3084) to Nancy J. (Price) Benedict [28]. He is believed to have passed in early 1904, in Dunlop, Iowa [29].
