Biography

  • A source to verify Augusta's birth information has not been found, but based on the reported age she gave in the various censuses cited below, Augusta was born in about 1849 in Illinois to John Hogaboom and Abagail Hopkins. The "History of LaSalle County" by Elmer Baldwin claimed that John had 14 children - Augusta was the 11th of 13 of the children born to John and Abagail who have been identified, 8 girls and 5 boys: Adelia (1828), Emily (1833), Mary (1834), Marvin (1837), Edgar (1837), Charlotte (1838), Caroline (1840), Frances (1844), George (1845), Lorenzo (1847), Augusta (1848), Wilburn (1850) and Celestia (1853).
  • The 1850 United States Federal Census [1] [2] [3] shows John (51). Abigail (40), Adelia (22), Emily (17), Mary (15), Charlotte (12), Caroline (9), Frances (6), and Augusta (3) living in Meriden, La Salle, Illinois where John is a farmer and shows ownership of $1,000.00 in real estate.
  • The 1860 United States Federal Census [4] [5] [6] shows John (63). Abigail (53), Marvin (23), Edgar (21), Lorin (17), Caroline (20), Frances (16), Augusta (13), George (15), Celestia (7), and Wilburn (10) living in South Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois, where John is a farmer and Marvin is a farm laborer. John is shown owning $6,500.00 in real estate and he also has a personal estate of $1,300.00.
  • Augusta's mother, Abigail, died on June 18th 1864 in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois Find A Grave: Memorial #44736193. After her death Lorenzo's father married again on October 22nd 1865. His second wife was the widow Harriet (Austin?) Brooks (as noted in Abigail's Find a Grave memorial).
  • Augusta's sister, Emily, died in April 1866 (no source). Her husband then married Emily's sister, Charlotte, on May 28th 1866 [7].
  • The 1870 United States Federal Census [8] [9] [10] shows Augusta living in a household consisting of Edgar (30), Lorenzo (26), Wilber (19), Augusta (23) and Edgar (8 months) in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois. The 4 adults are siblings (their dad lives next door) and young Edgar is widower Edgar's child - his wife had died the previous year. Edgar, Lorenzo, and Wilber are all farmers and along with Augusta who is shown as "keeping house" reports no assets.
  • Augusta married Andrew Dageet in 1871 in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois [11] [12] [13]. One child, a boy, was born to this marriage, Edward, in about 1871. When and how/why this marriage ended has no been ascertained.
  • Augusta's sister, Caroline, died on May 23rd 1873 in La Salle County, Illinois [14].
  • Augusta married Albert E. King on March 17th 1874 in Iroquois, Illinois [15] [16] [17] [18] [19]. The ceremony was officiated by Thomas Correll, Justice of the Peace. Three children are known to have been born to this marriage, 2 girls and 1 boy, Daisy (1878), Harry (1882), and Augusta (1884). A 4th child, Edward Dageet King (1871) was a part of the family and a product of Augusta's first marriage to Andrew Dageet.
  • Augusta's father, John, died on February 28th 1879 in Ottawa, La Salle. Illinois [20].
  • The 1880 United States Federal Census [21] [22] [23] shows Abbie (Albert) (30), Gusta (Augusta) (29), Edward (10), and Daisy (1), living at 292 La Salle Street, Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois and Abbie (Albert) is shown working as a laborer.
  • The 1885 Nebraska State Census [24] [25] shows Albert (38), Augusta (30), Daisy (6), Harry (3) and Augusta (1 month) living on 8th Street in Plattsmouth, Cass, Nebraska, where Albert is working as a laborer.
  • Augusta passed away at the age of 38 on September 26th 1887 in Coffeyville, Montgomery, Kansas. Her death record [26] showed that she was 38 years old and had only resided in Kansas for 7 months and died from malarial fever. A local mortician was named as attending Augusta, but no disposition was shown for her remains.
  • The Kansas, U.S., Deaths and Burials, Index, 1885-1930 for Augusta [27] shows Augusta's death date/place and says that Augusta was laid to rest on September 27th 1887. No burial location was specified in the record summary. A "Find A Grave" search shows 10 cemeteries with Coffeyville addresses [28]. Augusta did not appear in any of the listings as of 15 February 2024.
