Emma was born in 1832 in Lasham, Hampshire. She was the second child of John Holdaway and Mary Norgate.
When Emma was a child, her family migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1841-42 to be pioneering residents of the city of Nelson, John on the Whitby and Mary and the children (William 12, Emma 10, George 8, James 5 and an infant who was born and died on board) following in the Mary Ann several months later. Sadly, Emma's mother Mary passed away just a few months after the migration.
She married Robert Edward Oscar Debruce (1830-) in 1851 and remarried James Hay Taylor (1821-1868) in 1859, with whom she raised a number of children.
Emma died on 17 September 1913[1] and is buried in Richmond Cemetery.[2]
There is considerably more detail about the Holdaway family's migration to New Zealand and first years there on the profile of Emma's father John Holdaway (1804-1888). There is also a detailed account of Emma's life and legacy (including photos and a full family tree up to 1991) in the chapter of The Holdaway Family: Pioneers of Nelson about her and her family, which is uploaded as an image.
Have added "needs profile created" category for additional child(ren) profiles not yet created. Family records/research (see chapter in the Holdaway book, uploaded as an image) lists three other children without profiles created, but a birth record has been found for just one of these (it seems there were not birth registrations until after marriage to James Taylor):
