The Armistice was signed in the Fall of 1918 and along with the rest of the world we celebrated....On Monday, February 1, 1919 I went to Howell to attend a meeting of the area ministers at the Presbyterian Church. Violet went along to do some shopping and while in a store became violently ill. She managed to get back to the church and we went home. We sent for a doctor but they were almost impossible to get, but finally one came and pronounced it 'flu and periotonitis. The next time he came he said pneumonia. On the fifth of the month she died. Suddenly I knew about grief first hand. The memory of the desolation of those days is still mine." Note: #N00019
