Biography

Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
Caleb Honor was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Caleb was born on 30 December 1842, the son of Thomas Honor and Elizabeth Honor (nee Harley), in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England. [1]

He married Elizabeth Janes of Cuddington, Buckinghamshire, on 27 February 1865 at the Aylesbury Register Office [2] .

Caleb was a miller. He was recorded as an apprentice miller in the 1861 Census when he resided with Thomas Alcock, a miller, at The Mill, Barrick Lane, Nether Winchendon, Aylesbury, Bucks [3].

In subsequent censuses his occupation is described as (corn) miller and resident with his family at Chandos Alley, Wendover. The nearest water mill to there, and probably where he worked, is now called "Old Mill House", Hale Road, Wendover, a Grade II listed building. The listing states
"House, formerly a watermill, converted 1929-31. (last worked 1923). White painted weatherboarding, old tiled gambrel roof, with small dormer on N. side. 2-storeys and attic. C20 leaded casements. Listing NGR: SP8701207823" [4]

Residence

At the time of the 1851 Census he lived with his parents, brother Reuben and sister Charlotte at Floyds Road, Wingrave, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire [5]

In 1861 Caleb lived with Thomas Alcock, to whom presumably he was apprenticed, and his family, at "The Mill", Barrick Lane, Nether Winchendon, Aylesbury, Bucks [3]. Barrick Lane is probably the road now known as Barrack Lane (2020).

At the time of his marriage his residence was given as Wingrave. Possibly by then he was living back in the family home [2].

In 1871 he lived with wife and three oldest children in Oxford Road, Aylesbury [1].

Census records from 1881 to 1911 give Caleb's address in Aylesbury variously as "Chandos Row" [6], "Back Street" [7] and "Back Street, Chandos Alley" [8] [9]. Presumably these all refer to the same location.

Caleb's gravestone.

He passed away 10 July 1915 [10] [11] [12], and was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Wendover on 13th July 1915 [13]. Note the difference of surname spellings between birth and death records.

Research Notes

It is reasonably sure that Caleb was not a wind miller. He is not listed among the millers at nearest windmill in Wendover, Tower Mill. [14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Caleb by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Caleb:
