Biography

William was born about 1630-1640 in Roxbury, Massachusetts [1], no record has been found and married Hannah Andrews on 1655 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts[2]. William died on November 8,1688. [3]

Appointed gravedigger of Roxbury, 1657.[4]

Lost a son, speculated to be either Thomas or William, in the Attack on Sudbury, 21 April 1676.[5]

Extracted from "The Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England" by James Savage; NEHGR 14:49; Roxbury VR; Rosemary markham's website William Hopkins was born in England about 1625. His parentage is unknown at this time. The name of hs first wife is unknown, they were probably married in England. William first appears in the Town records of Roxbury early in 1656. He is chosen to dig graves for the town, two shillings for adults and twelve pence for children under 10 years of age. The next entry of his name is in the baptismal records when on the "3 mo. 6 d. 1660" three children of William Hopkins were baptized, William, Thomas, and Hannah. This might be close to the time that his first wife died. He soon married Hannah Andrews of Dorchester, who asked to be transferred from the church at that town to the church at Roxbury on April 22, 1660. Roxbury records list only the birth of daughter Hannah on January 3, 1657 and death of son Ebenezer in 1674. William's son Thomas was in Wadsworth's Company under Capt. Turner and was killed by Indians on April 21, 1676. There is no record of his death although a date is given, November 5, 1688. His wife Hannah died of smallpox on January 5, 1678/9. Both William and Hannah were members of Rev. John Eliot's Church.

Hopkins-372 and Hopkins-370 appear to represent the same person because: I just adopted 372 and didn't realize the impossibility of 372 being the father of 370. They have almost same death date, 372 being in error. Pretty obvious that this Father/Son duo is actually the same person. WikiTree doesn't allow deleting people so merging is the best solution

Hopkins-372 and Hopkins-370 are not ready to be merged because: There is a lot of confusion about these two profiles, and clearly 372 is NOT the father of 370. However, there seems to be valuable clues in both of the bios, so if they are merged, please make that information in both bios is preserved.

William's parents appear to be fictitious and should be detached. See his findagrave profile at https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=32591533

Hopkins-1640 and Hopkins-370 appear to represent the same person because: Close enough birth years; same father; same spouse (Hannah shows up as Susannah in some records) Thanks.

Hopkins-1161 and Hopkins-370 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth years; same spouse; Hopkins-370 is the lowest number. (More merge proposals coming.)
