Biography

Name: Samuel Hopkins

Samuel was born on 15 Oct 1734 in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island, USA the son of Samuel Hopkins and Honour Brown. Samuel lived,[1] married,[2] raised a family,[3] passed away and was buried in this same Rhode Island town of West Greenwich. He passed away in 1813.[4]

Research Notes:

  1. There has been considerable confusion regarding Samuel Hopkins (1734-1813) as there are others of that name in the New England area of his period in history.
    1. Of particular interest is Samuel Hopkins (1741-1819) who married another Phebe; this the daughter of William Arnold and Phebe Stafford. Phebe (Arnold) Hopkins is buried in the Rockland Cemetery, Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island having been moved there from the Samuel Jenks Lot SC146
    2. Samuel Hopkins born 26 Aug 1740 Voluntown, Connecticut, USA
    3. Samuel Hopkins son of Samuel Hopkins born Aug 21, 1737 in Burlington, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
  2. Then there are the marriage issues.
    1. It is quite clear from several records that our Samuel Hopkins (1734-1813) married Phebe Case on 13 May 1779.[5][6]
    2. This is a troubling date as some of the children attributed to him are born before this date. Some have attempted to solve this by adding a first wife in Lucretia Waite. This marriage is suggested in the Find-A-Grave for Samuel, but it is unsourced. It is picked up an some FamilySearch.org profiles but these are unsourced as well. In fact there is no record of this marriage to be found.
    3. Checking the records of the children attributed to Samuel finds no record citing Lucretia as any of their mothers. Those that do cite a mother cite Phebe Hopkins. Samuel's son Rufus, born 1773, is clearly stated to be the son of "Esquire Samuel and Phebe (Case) Hopkins".[7]
    4. Until a verifiable record emerges, my best guess on the matter is that Samuel held Phebe Case as a mistress or common law wife until they were lawfully wed in 1779

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

George Washington Hopkins is my ancestor and I find him attributed as the son of this Samuel Hopkins all over the internet but no actual documentation. I have family history rumors that contradict it as well. I would love to see some documentation on all of his children.

Hi Brendan, Best case is to look at the census records around the time of his birth. I don't happen to have any info on George specifically.

In regards to previous comments: Phebe Arnold married a different Samuel Hopkins who was born in 1741and died in1819 (see "Research Notes added this day). My biography additions and research notes detail available records on the life and marriage of Samuel Hopkins b.1743 d.1813.

This Samuel Hopkins Jr. looks to have married twice, first to Lucretia Waite. Phebe Arnold or Phebe Case the second wife? Phebe Arnold does seem likely because Samuel's daughter Martha married the son of a Phebe Arnold (Arnold-14435) and Ezekiel Potter (Potter-9953). At least using family search these names come up. A family chart, handed down just lists Ezekiel and Phebe Potter.

Hi Lisa,

I don't quite remember the references that came to this couple. It is quite possible that Sam Jr was married twice and that is just has not been added to his profile on the tree. It seems to many that the "Arnold" family connection has been most prominent and the follow up has not been thorough. If you have documentation to support the addition. Please add the information and a source.

It seems like this section of the tree needs a little clean up and better references. Not quite sure how I ended up a profile manager here as this part was already built. I have found some duplication and made some myself as suggested possible duplicates don't always show up. I'm also unfamiliar with the merge process to fix any duplication.

Thanks for the help and effort!

I have done a little poking around and I do see on familysearch.com where Lucretia Waite is listed as a wife as well as Phebe Case https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LD82-2W6?icid=amp_hdr_signin . I did not find a marriage source for her and the marriage source for Phebe seems to date after the children are born. Not all the children have been added to this page and there is strong chance that edits need to be made. Finding and adding the proper documents to show marriages, births ect. would be helpful. Since I do not have memberships to ancestry or other no free sites, finding access to these docs is difficult.

Also looks like Phebe Arnold/Case needs to be worked out. The tree is not perfect and errors are made. Great thing is they can be fixed as more info is found.

Hopkins-9161 and Hopkins-8818 appear to represent the same person because: For some reason Samuel Jr did not show up as a suggested match while I was looking to add the family connection. Only when I found Samuel Sr did I see that Jr had already been created.
