Biography of David Hottel, Sr.

David Hottel was the fifth child of George Hottel, b. near Mt. Olive, a hamlet, in Shenandoah Co., Va., in 1753, grew to manhood on his father's homestead and married in about 1778, Margaret (Ringer)*. (His widow married again, Dec. 23, 1787, JACOB TRESLER and came to Fairfield Co., Ohio.)

David Hottel owned a farm of 292 acres lying adjacent to his parental home at the north, on the drains of the noted Toms Brook and Funks Mill Run. This farm was given to him by his father, and he in turn gave it to his three sons; John Conrad, George and David. His only daughter, Mary Elizabeth, received an equal share in currency.

David Hottel died at 34 years of age. His will was probated in the court of Shenandoah Co., Va., Feb. 22, 1787, the approximate date of his death. He left four small children in the care of their stepmother(?*) and under the guardianship of his brother, John Jacob Hottel. He was a Christian man and never forgot the Author of all the blessings of life as indicated in his last will. [1]

  • I added the surname Ringer, as I believe that Margaret was the daughter of Conrad Ringer
  • ? I have a question about the biography of David Hottel. Why does it say he left four small children in the care of their stepmother? Wasn't Margaret their mother? Is that a misprint in the original document? There is nothing that I could find that says he had married twice and that Margaret was not the mother of his children. This is in the original history book of the Hottel family.
