My name is Cherilyn Davis. My maiden name is Howard. I was born in Brunswick, Georgia to Leroy Pasley and Marilyn Howard. My maternal grandparents are Barty Howard, Sr., and Beatrice Atkinson Howard. My grandfather's father, James (Jim) Howard, was born around 1877 to Mary Jane Binn in South Carolina. His birth name was Willie/Will. I believe he took on the name of Rawles after his mother's husband, Jett Rawles/Rawls/Ralls. Oral history says that he later changed his name to James Howard after killing a man. My paternal grandparents are Annie Lee Harker Pasley and Leroy Pasley, Sr. According to oral history, Annie's father was actually Hezekiah Strickland, although other records show Herman Harker. Her mother was Lilly Mae Gibbs. Leroy Pasely/Paisley/Pasley's father will Willie Pasely. According to oral history, he changed his name after his mother and father left him in South Carolina due to him having a darker skin complexion. He allegedly took on the name of an uncle.
My maternal grandparents were offspring of the black Atkinson family living in Camden County, Georgia, although they were not related. My grandfather's parents were Hester Atkinson and James (Jim) Howard. Hester's parents were Barty Atkinson and Peggy McKay/Mackey. According to oral history, Barty may have changed his surname to Atkinson. Jame's mother was Mary Jane Binn. He had half siblings: Lula Rawls, James Rawls, David Rawls, and Mary Rawls.
