Biography

William Howitt is Notable.

William was born into a quaker family in Heanor, Derbyshire. His parents were Thomas and Phebe Howitt. ^[1]

He married Mary Botham in 1821. ^[2] William and Mary were both writers and published a large number of works on a number of subjects. Both published some works individually but they also frequently collaborated.

William and Mary initially settled in Nottingham where William had a chemist's shop on Parliament Street. They subsequently moved with their children to Esher in Surrey and then spent 2 years in the early 1840s in Heidelberg in Germany, feeling that their children would benefit from a German education.

In 1851 Mary & William were living in the Marylebone area of London. ^[3] In 1852 William and his sons Alfred and Charlton travelled to the goldfields of Australia. His son Alfred settled in Australia but William and Charlton returned to England after two years.

In 1861 Mary & William were living in St Pancras. William was listed as an author of general literature and Mary as an author and poetess. ^[4]

In later life William and Mary spent most of their time in Europe, in Rome and the Tyrol. William died in Rome in 1879 and is buried there. ^[5]
