Research Progress

Conflict in Spouse:

A posting on Facebook by a fellow researcher named Stephen Haynes pointed to a conflict in the name of the spouse of Michael HOWLET. In the posting he stated that the wife of Michael HOWLET was actually Experience MacKay, daughter of Daniel MacKay.

He mentioned that, Daniel MacKay "was one of those unfortunate Scotsmen captured by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War and transported to New England in involuntary servitude. Daniel was one of the more fortunate among them, however, marrying, having many children, and living to a ripe age and dying in 1711."

He went on to mention that "in his will, [Daniel MacKay] mentions a bequest to a his youngest married daughter, 'Experience Howlet.'"and that he believes that "Experience had married a Michael Howlet and they had two sons in Daniel's then home town, Newton, MA, in the seven years before Daniel died."

This brings into question the identity of Experience and whether she was a MacKay or a Newton. Further research in documents is required to determine her true identity. [NOTE: I said in documents, this does not mean other researcher's trees or submitted information that was not written down within an acceptable time frame in reference to the actual events. This will be hard to prove due to the time frame that the individuals were living.]

I would like to find more definitive information too, but considering we know that Experience MacKey (MacKay, Kee...) married a Howlett, I believe that this is probably her and someone put the name of her hometown as her last name at some point. Since Experience Newton was not in her father's will, I believe that she died young. Also, at least one of Experience MacKey's brother's moved to Killingly.

I agree. Just happened across Experience MacKay as an ancestor but then saw changes being made to Newton.

Not that it’s evidence, but Experience son is Daniel, which makes sense if her father was Daniel.

More evidence in Ancestey.com showing a Experience Newton married John Smith in 1719.
