Around 1850 Minerva married William Edward Wood in Marion, Arkansas. In 1855 Minerva gave birth to their son George Edward Wood. In early 1857 her husband William joined the Baker-Fancher Party[2] on the wagon train headed for California.

Minerva chose not to go because she was pregnant. The well organized group figured on getting resupplied in Salt Lake City. However the Mormon church was under martial law and the party went onward without supplies. They camped at the Mountain Meadows to rest. There in September 1857 Mormon millitia attacked and murdered all adult members including William, of the Baker-Fancher party and took all their possessions including small children.

Back in Arkansas the widowed Minerva Jane Wood married Joel Baker Northcott around 1859. Between 1860 and 1863 Minerva gave birth to their three children in Sugarloaf, Arkansas. The 1870 census shows them living in Sugarloaf. Then they moved to Texas. The 1880 census[3] shows Minerva Jane Northcott raising her family in McLennan, Texas. George is on page 2 and Minerva on page 10.

Grandma Northcutt Passes

"Sorry to report this week that Grandma Northcutt passed awary last Friday morning at four o'clock. She was eighty years old. She was the mother of Mrs. Cottrell of Brady and Mrs. Attaway of Calk Creek. She was ill five months before the death angel kissed her away. During her illness many a loved one sent up a silent prayer:

Not here, oh, Death, not here,
Is there no other flower for Thee to take.
All the world is Thin, and for its' sake
Oh come not here."

But alas. Death loves a shining mark and it came. Interment was made in the Calf Creek Cemetery. She leaves a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren to mourn her loss. She had been a member of the Missionayr Baptist church for sixty years. Weep not deat ones for we will all soon cross over and meet again where there will be no sorrow, no pain nor sickness.

It's so great to see her picture! She is my four-times great aunt (her youngest brother, James, is my three-times great grandfather).
