There is a tradition identifying Ann Hunloke or Hunlocke as the wife of William Benedict and the mother of early American immigrant settler Thomas Benedict. This is a misidentification that derives from a mistaken interpretation of the will of Henry Hunloke (a.k.a. Hunlocke) of Wingerworth, Derbyshire, England. The will, written in 1610 and proved in 1612, provided for bequests to "my loving son, William Benedeke and my daughter Ann Benedeke, at twenty one years of age."[1] This language in the will was interpreted to indicate that Henry Hunloke had a daughter named Ann who was not yet 21 in 1610 and that this Ann Hunloke had married William Benedict, probably not long before the date of the will. Pierson quotes a passage in David Edwards' book The Hunlokes of Wingworth Hall (2nd edition, 1976, Wingerworth Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England) which stated that there were no other records of William or Ann as children of Henry Hunloke and suggested that they might have been illegitimate children.[2]
LaRue Olsen points out that "son" and "daughter" did not necessarily mean what they would mean today, but could refer to other relationships such as stepchildren and sons- and daughters-in-law.[3] In the 1994 article "There Was No Ann Hunloke," Roberta Pierson noted that if Henry Hunloke had a daughter Ann born in about 1590, Ann's mother would have been his first wife Margaret, who would have been about 49 years old (unusually old) at the time of Ann's birth.[4] Pierson found that William Benedict had married Judith Marsh, whose mother Margaret (Walker) Marsh had married Henry Hunloke after the death of her first husband, Nicholas Marsh. Thus, Judith (Marsh) Benedict was Henry Hunloke's stepdaughter. Judith apparently had died before he wrote his will, and Henry Hunloke's bequest to Ann Benedict was in fact directed to Judith's daughter Ann Benedict, who was Henry Hunloke's step-granddaughter.[5][6]
In 2006, Olsen published research identifying Elizabeth Stephin as the mother of Thomas Benedict.[7]
There are no records of the baptism or other life events of Ann Hunloke. If she was under age 21 in 1610, she would have been born in about 1590 or thereafter. WikiTree profile Hunloke-6 estimated that she was born in about 1596. If her maiden name was Hunloke and she was called by the married name of Benedict in 1610, she must have been married by 1610, indicating a birth several years earlier than 1596.
Ann Hunloke is said to have married William Benedict, who was much older than Ann. Their son Thomas would have been born in 1617 and she is estimated to have died in about 1618, after which William Benedict married again.
