Biography

Mary Huston was born about 1756, probably at Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia. She was the only daughter of John Huston of Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. He was among the grantees of land in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, near the Missiquash river, in 1763.[1]

Mary (Huston) Chipman passed away, probably at Annapolis, Nova Scotia, before her husband, Rev. Thomas Handley Chipman married his second wife in Oct 1786.

Mary's father, Capt. John Huston of Cumberland, was the protector and foster father of Sir Brook Watson, whom he found as a one-legged orphan boy in Boston and took with him to Cumberland. Brook Watson became a notable merchant in London, long acted there as agent for Nova Scotia, was knighted, became Lord Mayor of London, and afterward received a baronetcy. When he died it is said he left legacies to Mary (Huston) Chipman's family.[1]

Mary married in 1776, Thomas Handley Chipman, fourth son of Handley Chipman and Jane Allen. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island, 17 Jan 1756; and died 11 Oct 1830. He lived at Annapolis, Nova Scotia and was pastor of the First Baptist Church there.[2]

Thomas had moved from Cornwallis to Annapolis, Nova Scotia about 1790, settled on a farm in Annapolis County, and in 1807 moved to a lot in Nictaux on which a grandson lived.[3]

Thomas married, first, Sep 1776, Mary, only daughter of John Huston of Cornwallis, Nova Scotia; second, Oct 1786, Jane Harding of Boston, Massachusetts; third 14 Sep 1820, Mary Briggs of Portland, Maine; fourth, Mary Dunn.[2]

Handley Chipman wrote:[4]

"The Eighth [child], my son Thomas Handley, was born January 17th, A. D. 1756, was also baptized by said Minister Vinal, his first wife was John Huston's Esq. Daughter by whom he had a Son and three daughters, all living. She dying, He is Married again to a Boston or Charlestown young woman whose name was Harding, by whom he has two sons and two daughters Living. He is turned Baptist and is their Minister in Annapolis. O may God bless him in it."

Rev. Chipman had four children by his first marriage, and six by the second.[2]
