Biography

When Nicholas Hutchins was born on June 24, 1711, in Baltimore, Maryland, his father Thomas, his mother, Susanna. He married Elizabeth Robinson on January 26, 1767, in his hometown. They had nine children in 25 years. He died on November 13, 1794, in Maryland having lived a long life of 83 years.

"In this case there … directed to the Sheriff of Baltimore County against the said Nicholas to answer unto his said Lordship concerning his begetting a bastard child on the body of a certain Elizabeth Cheshire pursuant to a punishment found against her last March Court. Whereupon now on this sixth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty four at Joppa here comes the said Sheriff to wih Bis and Hall Genl and returns that he hath taken the body of the said Nicholas which said Nicholas accordingly appear and being by the said Sheriff set to the bar of this Court and being demanded how he will requite himself of the matter thereof he stands."

In 1736, Nicholas Hutchins was indicted a second time for bastardry: i.e., for being the father of Sarah Owens's child.

Will of Nicholas Hutchins

In the name of GOD Amen, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding. Thanks be to God, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, vis, First of all I recommend my Soul to God from whence it came and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor whom I shall hereafter name.

First, my will and desire is that all my just debts shall be paid. Then I give to my son Richard Hutchins one cow and no more of my Estate. I give and bequeath to my son William Hutchins one cow and no more of my Estate. I give and bequeath to my son Jacob Hutchins one good feather (bed) and furniture and five pounds current money and no more of my Estate. I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Amos one cow and no more of my Estate. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Hutchins one good feather bed and furniture and one cow. I give and bequeath to my grandson Jesse Hutchins Ditto one good feather bed and furniture and one cow. I give and bequeath to my son Joshua Hutchins one hundred twenty three acres of land being part of my Lady;s (?) Manor known by the name of Lot No. 12 to him, his heirs and assignees forever and I bequeath to my said son Joshua Hutchins all and every part of the remainder of my Estate and Last of All it is my will and desire that my said son Joshua Hutchins shall be my whole and sole Executor of my whole Estate. (Signed) Nicholas Hutchins (SEAL) Signed, sealed and acknowledged to be his Last Will and Testament in the presence of Baltimore County, to wit Robert Smith, John Smith and Edm Landsbury on the 25th Day of November 1794

Came John Smith Robert Smith and Edmund Lansbury, subscribing witnesses to the foregoing Last Will and Testament of Nicholas Hutchins late of said County deceased and made oath on the Holy Evangej (?) of God that they heard him publish, pronounce and declare the same to be his Last Will and Testament. At the time of his doing he was to the best of their apprehensions of sound desposing mind and memory and understanding and that they subscribed their names as witnesses to his Will in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other.
