Biography

(Note: Sarah McCracken i(b. 1815, Pennsylvania) is also recorded as a 65 year old household member on the 1880 US Census. No relationship with the family known.)

"Zenorsville store located two miles west of Gilbert. Zenorsville, a once thriving community, was site of coal mine. Mine was on west side of Squaw Creek about 1/2 mile south of blacktop road running west from Gilbert. Lily Johnson, donor of this photo, is granddaughter of Jim Hutchison, owner of store and the mine. When the mine gave out, all of community's stores and some of its residences were moved into Gilbert. " Ames (Iowa) Public Library Photo collection (available online 2/24/2017)

"Zenorsville store operated by Jim Hutchison. Zenorsville was a mining village two miles west of Gilbert on the west bank of Squaw Creek at the turn of the century. The settlement was in existence from the 1870s until 1915." Ames Public Library, photo collection.

"DIED.--On Tuesday, August 7th, James Hutchinson. He was born in Scotland but came to this country when three years of age and has since resided here. He came to Zenorsville, Iowa, in 1872 since which time he has resided in Story county. In 1898 the family moved to Ames where he resided at the time of the last call. In 1852 he was married to Miss Jean Love and they raised a family of eight children, all of whom are living. The funeral was held at the Congregational church under the direction of Rev. Herr, and the Masonic fraternity gave their ritual rites as he was a member of that order."

James is buried near his wife, Jean Love Hutchison (1833-1904) and her stone mentions her spouse. Or
