Biography

Private John Ingram served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: May 1, 1863
Mustered out: May 1865
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company I, 6th Alabama Cavalry

John Ingram was born in October 1842 in Alabama and was the son of Green Ingram and Salina Hammonds.[1] In 1860, John was living in Butler Co., Alabama with his parents[2] and when the Civil War began, John, like many men in Alabama, joined the Confederate Army. He was twenty-one years of age when he enlisted on 1 May 1863 in Butler co., Alabama and was a Private in Company I, 6th Alabama Cavalry.[3] His older brother, Samuel Ingram, also served in this same company. This regiment was included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana in May 1865.

After the war, John met and married Sarah Moseley on 9 January 1868 in Bullock co., Alabama[4] and farmed for a living. Shortly after the birth of their first and only child, Edith Ingram, they move west to Texas and are found in Grimes county in the 1870 census where his parents and other siblings have also migrated to.[5]

In the 1880 census, John, age 35 and now a widower, has migrated to Milam county Texas where his aged mother Salina Hammonds and nephew William Thomasson reside in his home. [6]

In the 1900 census, John, age 58, is living with his daughter and her family in Brazos co., Texas.[7]Soon after his health begins to fail and on 27 February 1903 John passed away and was buried in the Bryan City Cemetery in Bryan, Brazos co.,Texas.[8]
