Sarah Betsy Ivory was born in Tring, Hertfordshire in 1848.[1] She was the daughter of William Emms Ivory and Elizabeth Kemp. In 1855, Betsy's parents and her siblings boarded the "Cashmere", which departed London on 2 July 1855 and arrived into Lyttelton on 23 October 1855. Her father was recorded as being a "gardener", aged 34; her mother, Betsy, aged 34; and children - John (aged 12), Priscilla (aged 3) and Edward (1). Betsy was recorded as being aged 7.
The family moved to Rangiora, North Canterbury very quickly after arrival into Lyttelton and Betsy's father, established a nursery.
She married William Alfred Burt, a coal merchant and carriage driver and the couple lived in Rangiora, North Canterbury, New Zealand
Betsy passed away in 1906 aged 58
