Edward was born in Brill, Oxfordshire in 1853.[1] He was the son of William Emms Ivory and Elizabeth (Betsy) Kemp.
In 1855, Edward's parents and his siblings boarded the "Cashmere", which departed London on 2 July 1855 and arrived into Lyttelton on 23 October 1855. His father was recorded as being a "gardener", aged 34; his mother, Betsy, aged 34; and children - John (aged 12), Betsy (aged 7); and Priscilla (aged 3) . Edward was recorded as being aged 1.
The family moved to Rangiora, North Canterbury very quickly after arrival into Lyttelton and Edward's father, established a nursery.
Edward married Eliza Ann Frizzell in 1888. Marriage Notice: Star, Issue 6388, 6 November 1888: "MARRIAGES. IVORY-FRIZZELL - Nov. 1, at the residence of Mr H. Lee, Cust, by the Rev D. Rodger, Edward William, second son of William Ivory, Nurseryman, Rangiora, to Eliza Ann, youngest daughter of Hugh Frizzell, of Carrowcolman, County Tyrone, Ireland."
The couple lived in Rangiora for some time - carrying on the nursery business after Edward's father's death. Eventually the couple moved to Tahunanui, near Nelson, New Zealand, where Edward was a seed merchant.
He died about 1941, aged 87. He was buried in Wakapuka Cemetery, Marlborough, Nelson, New Zealand. [2]
