Biography

No absolutely conclusive birth records and census data is scant. The most likely candidate is Margaret Louisa Jackson born in Somers Town on 10 July 1869. There are a few anomalies though, firstly the spelling of the middle name (Louise or Louisa), secondly the minor difference that this would make her (just) 61 at date of death whereas the death certificate says 60 - which would also agree with the marriage certificate. Perhaps most importantly, the name of father on marriage certificate is shown as Frederick Jackson, clerk, whereas birth certificate (if we assume it to be the correct one) shows father as George Stuart Jackson - journeyman tailor. If the assumed birth certificate is correct that would make Frederick Jackson a pure fabrication presumably for the purposes of respectability. Experience of illegitimacy and dubious parentage in the Victorian era leads me to believe that this is almost certainly the case. In fact George Stuart Jackson too may be an invention. Another oddity on the birth certificate is that the mother is described as 'Jackson, formerly Jackson'.

The address given on the marriage certificate helps us a little, the place then being occupied by a Mr and Mrs Perry, their daughter Sarah and three boarders. Sarah Perry signed as witness to the wedding. What this does tell us is that Margaret was not living with her immediate family at the time of her marriage.

N.B. DNA analysis of her descendants indicate a percentage (4% and 7% in her great granddaughters) of European Jewish DNA. There is no suggestion of Jewish ancestry in any of their other ancestors. As written details of her paternity are clearly unreliable it is quite likely that her father was of Ashkenazy Jewish descent.
