Golden Wedding

Observer (Adelaide, S.A.) Sat 8 Dec 1928, Page 57, GOLDEN WEDDING.

MR AND MRS S. J. JACOBS. On December 3, 1878, Mr. Samuel Joshua Jacobs, son of Charles and Elizabeth Joshua Jacobs, was married in Victoria, to Caroline Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ellis. Mr. Ellis at that time was sheriff of Central Bailiwick, Melbourne. Thus on Monday next Mr. S. J. Jacobs, a highly esteemed and popular Adelaide business man and sport patron, will, with his wife, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. Already they have been inundated with letters and telegrams of congratulation from relatives and friends, near and far. When in Melbourne recently, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs were entertained by the sisters of Mrs. Jacobs, and were felicitated upon the advent of the important and auspicious event in their lives.. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs reside at Glenelg. Mrs. Jacobs has always taken a prominent part in charitable movements, and like her husband, takes a keen interest in racing.
Mr. Jacobs was born in Adelaide on March 28, 1853, his father being the founder of Charles Jacobs & Son, merchants, some 0 years ago. He received his early education at Young's School, and later owing to there being no University in Adelaide, he was sent to the Geelong College, and finally matriculated at the Melbourne University, In 1876 he was admitted as an attorney and solicitor in Victoria and South Australia. His articles were served with Malleson, England, and Stewart, at Melbourne. Mr. Jacobs practised his profession for eight years, from 1878 to 1884. being in partnership with the late Mr. W. F. Stock, under the firm name of Stock & Jacobs. In 1884 he decided to relinquish the legal profession and joined his father as a partner in the business of Charles Jacobs & Sons, sugar merchants. As time went on Mr. Jacobs extended his business activities, and became a director of companies as well, for in addition to his own business he is managing director of the S.A. Brewing Company, Limited, the Castle Salt Cooperative Company, Limited, a local director of the Sun Fire Office, local director of the Great Boulder Proprietary G.M. Company, chairman of directors of Timor Development Company.
For many years Mr. Jacobs was a member of the council of the Adelaide University, and also chairman of the finance committee of that institution. For two years he was president of the S.A. Chamber of Commerce, and gained the blue riband of the commercial world by occupying the position of president of the Associated Chamber of Commerce for South Australia. He is president of the Amateur Billiards Association, chairman, B.P.C.A., a member on the advisory council of the Travellers' Aid Society, chairman of the commercial section of the State Advisory Council, and a member of the committee of the S.A. Jockey Club. For 25 years he has held the chairmanship of Tattersalls Club, and is a member of the C.TA., Naval and Military, and Stock Exchange Clubs. For over 22 years Mr. Jacobs held the presidency of the S.A. Bowling Association. The above gives some indication of the fullness of Mr. Jacobs' hours throughout the years of an undoubtedly useful commercial and community life, the pleasure of which even advancing age does not appear to effect.
The family of Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs comprise a son and four daughters. The son, Mr. Roland E. Jacobs, is well known in commercial circles of the city. The four daughters married four brothers, sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Jacobs, who were in no way previously related to the S. J. Jacobs family. The daughters are Mesdames L. C. (Elizabeth), E. R. (Gipsy), E. J. (Dorothea), Jacobs, all in London, and Mrs. T. A. Jacobs (Agnes), of Melbourne. The grandchildren number 22. Owing to the distance separating theamily, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs decided not to hold any social function in celebration of the golden jubilee, but instead they will endow a cot in perpetuity at the Children's Hospital as an offering of thanksgiving.
