Joseph Henry James was the son of Elizabeth Jane Hodge and (married 1872 NZ) Henry James.

In 1903 he married Dora Vere McGarvie, the daughter of Sarah and Archibald McGarvie, and they had ten children.
In January 1919, his brother Arthur, died in Joseph's house, in Grey Lynn, Auckland.

JAMES—On January 25, 1919. at the residence of his brother Joseph James 127, Ariki Street, Grey Lynn, Arthur James, third son the late Henry and Elizabeth James, also grandson of Mary Hodge; aged 37 years.
He died in 1946. His widow died in 1969.
Three of their children died in infancy. Their surviving children were:
Pt Eric James, he was the elder of twin sons. His younger twin brother, Archibald, died in infancy (aged four). He was killed on active service in 1943 during World War II.
Mabel James, married Edwin Thornton Tidd.
Vere James, married Cornelius Lewis Bickerton.
Arthur Raymond James, he was the elder of twin sons. His younger twin brother, Ronald, died in infancy (aged 8 days). He married Winifred Ailsa Mary Campbell.

Janet Mathieson James, married Raymond Trevallow Owen Johnston.
