Biography

Mary, daughter of Ninian Jamieson and Mary Allan, was born on 22 March 1816 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland.^[1]

Mary married Peter McNair in 1831 in New Carlisle, Lower Canada.^[2] At the time of the maarriage, Peter is said to be of major age meaning over 21, but Mary is listed as being "a spinster of minor age with the consent of parents", whose names are given as "Ninian Jamieson and his wife Mary".

A few years later, when her husband had died, a widowed Mary married Duncan Robertson (abt.1812-1897) in 1837 in New Carlisle, Lower Canada. ^[3] In this record she is listed as "the second daughter of Ninian Jamieson and Mary Allan his wife, both residing at Chataqua (likely Châteauguay) in the district of Montreal and widow of Peter McNair."

In the 1861 census Mary and her husband Duncan are livingn in New Richmond, Bonaventure, Canada East wiht their 9 children: ^[4] Hugh Robertson aged 20, Peter Robertson aged 18, Mary Robertson aged 15, David Robertson aged 16, Fanny Robertson 12, William Robertson aged 10, Ninian Robertson aged 8, John Robertson aged 5, Isabella aged 3.

In the 1871 Canadian census, Mary (age 56) was recorded as married in New Richmond, Bonaventure, Quebec, Canada.^[5]

In the 1881 census Mary is 63 and she and Duncan are still living in New Richmond.^[6] They are living with two of their younger children.

Mary died 30 November 1883 in New Richmond and was buried there on 3 December 1883.^[7]

Research Notes

Based on the records of both of her marriages, we can be confident that Mary's parents are Ninian Jamieson and Mary Allan. Therefore I have removed Alexander Jamieson and Elizabeth McKenzie as her parents. I have located her correct birth record and removed the one linking her to the wrong parents.^[8] Patterson-15268
