John was one of 13 children born to Vincent and Elizabeth Candler Jessee.

Mary Burk and John were married in Virginia and started their family there.

They first appear in the 1850 Russell County census.[1]

John and Mary were both 26 years of age and, based on the age of their first child, they were married approximately in 1845.

They migrated to Claiborne County, TN in time for the 1860 census.

They had five daughters and six sons.[2]

Mary died on the day her daughter Mary was born, February 20, 1864, leaving John with baby Mary and at least seven other children still at home.[3]

He married Louisa E. Kelly in Union County on March 16, 1865.[4]

They had four sons and two daughters.[5][6]

The last census that John appears in was Tennessee Voter's List of 1891.

Louisa is indicated as a widow in 1900.[7]
