Richard was born in 1859[1] in Sandholme, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised nearby in Eastrington. He was the son of Richard Prince and Ann Healas.[2] The family lived at Club Hill House in Sandholme in 1861.[3]
At the time of the 1881 census Richard worked as a confectioner and boarded in Hull, Yorkshire.[4]
Richard married Elizabeth Day in 1882 in York, Yorkshire.[5][6] By 1891 the family lived in Altofts, Yorkshire. Richard worked as a colliery horse shunter.[7] He worked as a colliery winding engine man in 1901[8] and was a labourer above ground in 1911.[9]
