Fayrene "Faye" Lavern Johnson was born on September 5, 1926 in Okolona, Clark County, Arkansas. The daughter of a school teacher and Baptist minister. She graduated from Arkansas Baptist College (ABC), a historically black college in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. After her graduation, she worked for the Los Angeles, California School Board.[1]
In 1957, she married George Treadwell, an American jazz trumpeter and manager of the Drifters. When he died in 1967, Faye bought out his partners and took control of the The Drifters.[1]
In the 1970s, they traveled to London, England, and lived there for thirty years. Although she maintained a home in Englewood, New Jersey.[1]
During her time as manager of "The Drifters", she fought many legal battles for the rights to The Drifters name. When she retired in 2001 due to ill health, her daughter Tina took over management of the group.
On May 22, 2011 Faye died in Los Angeles, California. She left a legacy of being one of the first African-American women managers. In 2021, The Drifters Girl opened at the Garrick Theatre with a musical of Faye's life.[1][2]
