Elizabeth was born 30 Nov 1770 in North Carolina to Henry Johnson and Rachel Holman. She married Sampson Mathews (b. 23 Nov 1767, d. 11 Oct 1846). ^[1]

Note: The gravestone of their son, Richard Mathews (1800 - 1846), verifies the spelling of their last name as having only one 'T'.

1. THOMAS BRADSHAW MATHEWS, b. 9 Sep 1797, d. 22 Jun 1365. He married Fannie Rowell and they reared 13 children.
2. RICHARD MATHEWS, b. 11 Jan 1800, d. 18 May 1846.
3. POLLY MARY MATHEWS, b. 14 May 1802. Married William Cumming and they had no children.
4. HENRY JOHNSON MATHEWS, b. 13 Mar 1805.
5. JOSEPH RANDOLPH MATHEWS, b. 21 Aug 1807, d. 12 Aug 1889. In March 1833, he married Sallie Blanton Ryan.
6. ARCHER POSEY MATHEWS, b. 10 Apr 1810, d. 28 Apr 1819. He lived and died in Tennessee.
